Can't receive a Fax

I receive the following error message when receiving a fax on Windows XP
'An error occured while receiving a fax'. How do I correct this?

This is the expected error message if you get a regular telephone call
to your fax line. Do you *know* that the call that was answered was in
fact from a fax machine?
