I have a windows update to be installed and my computer will not allow it.
It fails everytime. The little yellow shield stays at the bottom right of
my screen telling me to install it. I would rather not at this point.
How can I get rid of that shield in this instance since this is one update I
cannot install and do not want to install. Thanks.

It is not wise to turn off Windows Update notification as suggested by the
other poster. Instead, either troubleshoot the issue or tell Windows Update
not to show you this update again.

To troubleshoot the issue, Google using a search term such as "Windows
Update KB[whatever number it is] fails". You can also post in the Windows
Update newsgroup, microsoft.public.windowsupdate.

If you know what the update and is, it's not a critical security update, and
you choose not to install it - IE8 for example - then have your Windows
Update settings at one of the non-automatic choices like "download updates
and notify me when ready". Then when you get the yellow shield, click it to
get the installation dialog box. Choose "Custom" and not "Express". The
Custom choice will allow you to see the updates. Uncheck the one you don't
want and continue. You'll be given the option to "never show me this update
again". Take it.

Karen, you can selectively forbid specific updates from ever being
installed on your PC (without disabling the Windows Update faciltity).

You can do this through the 'Custom' button. I have 'Silverlight' and
other MS-nonsense banned from being installed from my PC. You still get
notifications from newer security updates, but not those you disable.

Thanks for your help. I used the custom button and took the checkmark out
of the box and the yellow shield is still in the lower right hand corner of
my monitor telling me I have updates to install. I installed other
updates but this particular one will not install on my computer but I can't
get rid of the yellow shield telling me I have updates to install. That is
the only one I have and it just won't go away.

Er.. did you 'check for updates' after you unchecked the unwanted
updates? (I am guessing the shield will have gone away by the time you
next boot-up. You will instead have a warning that you have hidden
(suppressed) updates.)

Go back and follow Malke's advice. The notification will go away.
