| I use VNC (TightVNC flavour) around my little home network.
I believe it is possible to use it from over the internet too.
But I don't understand how I get the connection through my router to the individual machines. Assuming that I can find out the external IP address how would I tell the VNC programme to go to an internal IP address too?

| This has always been a pain to use. If you want to use it from your friend's house, then try forwarding the ports on BOTH your router and your friend's router. The firewall might also play a role, so make sure it's allowing VNC access.
If setup properly, it should work over the internet. I'm sure it's just some router/firewall setting blocking VNC access.

Could we go back a step first.
I don't even know where to start talking to VNC ( any flavour) across the internet.
Locally it's fine, finding the local machines on my little network. But that's because I can tell it the IP of the machine being controlled. But from the internet I'd have to tell it the internet IP address and somehow the internal one too. |

It's up to personal taste, but I like UltraVNC and TightVNC.
You need the IP address of the computer you are trying to connect to. You need the actual public IP and not your home network IP (which is something like 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x).
There is an "easier" way to do this, but it will require the computer you are trying to access to run a program. Try SingleClick:
http://www.uvnc.com/addons/singleclick.html
I use this all the time for my users that need help remotely. I give them this program and tell them to open it and run it. Then I just login remotely.
With SingleClick you don't need to forward ports on the computer you are trying to connect to. But you must forward the ports on the computer you are using to connect to though. If you are unsure how to do the port forwarding, go to my favorite port forwarding site

Eureka!!!
"Port Forwarding"
Even the name of it sounds like it must be right.
I'll look at that site. Thanks. |
