When i plug in a USB such as a thumb drive or Ipod, the safely remove
hardware should appear on your taskbar. But it does not appear in my computer
and i thought maybe it was the usb device.
Then i plugged into my labtop and the safely remove hardware icon appears on
the taskbar. Does anyone know how i can make the safely remove hardware
program to appear once i plug in a usb device? Thanks |

Right-click the Start button, select Properties, Taskbar tab,
Customize... button. Find the Safely Remove Hardware icon and select
either Hide when inactive, Always show, but not Always hide.
If this computer is having other problems with the Taskbar displaying
properly, you can go to http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
and look for taskbarfix.exe or fixtaskbar.exe (I don't know the exact
name, obviously!) that can repair the icon associations.

The shortcut to "Safely Remove Hardware applet", AKA hotplug.dll, is
%windir%\system32\rundll32.exe shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL
hotplug.dll
If you also want the icon specify: hotplug.dll
This is EASILY unveiled using the FREE Sysinternals Process
Explorer(PE)
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/ProcessExplorer.html
Just start "Safely Remove Hardware", and in PE first add the "Window
Title" column
under View - "Select Coumns...", and then locate RUNDLL32.EXE - - "Run
a DLL as an App"
-- "Safely Remove Hardware", hit Enter or double-click and inspect the
"Command line".
Using this method you can find out any and all shortcuts you want.
Here is a detailed instruction on how to create the link and a tool
to fix a corrupt SystemTray

In your case, the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon was gone, right?
So per definition, you were NOT able to >Just start "Safely Remove
Hardware",
other than by creating a shortcut or issuing the command (%windir%\...
hotplug.dll)
through Start - Run..., right?
If you did do any of these two alternatives BEFORE moving into
PE(Process Explorer),
and you did have an open window to "Safely Remove Hardware" and did NOT
close it,
you would definitely be able to spot RUNDLL32.EXE in the leftmost
column,
along with "Safely Remove Hardware" in the "Window Title" column,
provided you added that column first as instructed.
You say you now have a working link. Well, use that, don't close the
window,
and open PE(Process Explorer). What do you see in the leftmost column?

Hi,
You are right, after opening the safely remove hardware window, i can spot
the RUNDLL32.EXE in the PE(Process Explorer).
The command line is "C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe"
shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
And it is also Run a DLL as an App. So the only way i can fix corrupt system
tray is by creating a link by finding out their command line right? Thank you
so much for your help.

My safely remove hardware icon seems to appear and disappear at will. I
appreciate the information on right clicking the start button. I did that
and changed it to show all the time, but it did not appear. Usually it will
show up after a full restart and then just disappear sometime later. I use a
thumb drive daily, so it's a pain having to go into my computer and eject the
drive.
