When I tried changing the icon of 'File Folder' in 'Folder Options' --> 'File
Types' , by mistake I made 'find' in 'Action' list ('Advanced' button) the
default. Now I am unable to remove it. So whenever I try double clicking a
folder, a search window appears.
Now I don't want anything in the list to be made default. System does not
allow me to do so.
What I tried to do and how it failed?
1. I tried adding a new action item with the application as 'explorer.exe'
and made it the default. After this whenever I double click a folder it opens
in a new window. Note that the Browse folder settings in General tab of
'Folder Options' is still 'Open folders in the same window'
2. There is a checkbox in 'Advanced' settings for 'File Folder' with label
'Browse in same window'. This option is unchecked and the best part is, this
is disabled.
How do I go back to my old settings where in no item in Action list is set
as default? |

Here is what you must do:
1. Create a new action in the "file folder" thing, give it a name thats easily destingushed such as blablabla, it dosn't realy matter what ou call it, it will be deleted soon after you created it.
2. Open the registary. search for "blablabla" or what ever you entered, as soon as it has been found check that in the same parent key there is a child key called "find" if there is then you are in the right place, what you now must now do is delete both blablabla and find, all better.
NOTE: You probably did not make it the action, windows did, it seems that if you open the file folder actions list and press OK it will make find the default action, yet another example of windows suisidle tendancys. |

Thankyou for the solution, don't know what i would've done otherwise.
For anyone else who didn't know, all you have to do is go start>run>"regedit" and then search for your custom command using find and match whole string only and then delete the branch.
Thanks again |

You are most likely hitting the "NEW" button right bellow the list of file types. What you have to do is click on "File Folder" and then click advanced in the dialog box down below it. There you will find the settings you need to input.
You will have to enter the destinctive name just like he said, and you'll have to find some exe file to run in the "applications" box. A very good one is the "explorer.exe" that the original poster listed. (It's in the WINDOWS folder on the C: drive)
Then choose RUN from the start menu and type "regedit". The rest is listed above.
I just had to do this my self so I appreciate the help from everyone.
Thanks!
Good Luck! |

To correct the default action for a folder as 'Find', try this:
Copy the text below between the dotted lines, but not the dotted lines themselves. Open Notepad and paste it in. Save the result in a suitable location as folder.reg - making sure that the default .txt extension doesn't appear in the file name.
Double-click on the saved .reg file to merge the contents.
Restart.

Hi,
If I have it right, you want My Computer to open with a single pane window - not a double pane with the drives etc. on the left. If this is so:
Copy the text below between the dotted lines, but not the dotted lines themselves. Open Notepad and paste it in. Save the result in a suitable location as Single_pane.reg - making sure that the default .txt extension doesn't appear in the file name.
Double-click on the saved .reg file to merge the contents.
No need to restart the computer, but close My Computer and re-open it.

Hey,
Since your good in computer stuff, can you tell me how to change my default folder for "create new folder".
When you click on "create new folder", an empty folder comes up with a default icon ( a closed folder). I want to change that so that ever time i create a new folder, its what i want.
I know how to change each folder individually by right clicking and so on. But i dont want to have to do that every time i create a new folder.
Also is there a way to change all the yellow folders (clones) all at once. (not individually)
Please tell me how to.....this is not a problem, but i would like it my way..
Thanks |

If you want to change all folder icons you could try the link below. It's supposed to do what you want, but I couldn't get it to work. I even tried it manually, but didn't spend a lot of time on it maybe later.
A word of caution: The downloaded script will change registry settings and no "Undo" script is provided, other than entering a blank in the dialog boxes. So, to be safe, I strongly suggest you either (or both) create a Restore Point and/or backup the Registry by going to Start => Run and typing in regedit. In the Registry Editor, click on File and Export. Make sure the 'All' radio button is checked. Save in a suitable location and give it a name. If anything goes bad, double-click on the saved .reg file to restore the Registry to its current condition.
When you run the downloaded script from Kelly's it will ask for an icon file location. You should have a file handy, so you can type in the path. It asks for a path to an icon for the normal (closed) folder), and one for the open folder. It's not necessary to do both.
Here's the link:

This freeware might work for you. I got it to work nicely in two computers with XP and one with Windows 2000, but in one computer it worked fine when I went through My Computer, but the folders replaced icon didn't work when I went through Explorer. They would show for a split second and then revert to the default icon. But it's worth a shot. Quite a few themes to choose from, and more can be downloaded. There is an option to restore all the default icons, or an option to restore only the ones you want.

Hey, Mr. Sandman,
Glad it's what you were looking for. Strange thing is, I took a "shot" of the Registry before I ran the program, and a "shot" after I had changed the icons, and then by subtraction compared the two to see the difference. The Registry change for 'Folder' was the same as Kelly's tweak and the same as the one I had made manually. Go figure! Anyhoo, as long as it works.
Note that the location that holds the "new" icons is in the 'All Users' profile in 'Documents and Settings'. I think this can be changed if you ever want to, but it's normally OK where it is. |

I actually just had someone with the folder problem and had never seen it before. After looking around and finding it was a registry issue, I exported my registry, caused it, and compared registries.
The key:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Directory\shell]
@="none"
was changed to
@=""
I would think that it changed the default action from nothing to the first item in the context list (right-click menu) which is why clearing out this list like previous posts worked. I'm not an expert, but this seems to be the behavior. I changed the key back to "none" and it worked the same as before, and kept my right-click context menu.
The problem with the being with your drive setting instead of file folder is probably the same issue:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Drive\shell]
@="none"
Try changing that key, either by using regedit or save it to a .reg file.
Good luck |
