Not sure I fully understand your situation.

You say you know what is wrong - what did you do to fix it before?
("... have used it plenty before, and know that is wrong. ...")

You use the words, "... on reinstall system ..."; does that mean you
recently did a clean installation of this system? Or a repair installation?
Or neither? (If neither - what does it mean?)

How about you 'pretend' (it's actually fact) that we have no idea what you
have done to get to this point and explain the entire situation with a bit
of detail. At this point, I believe your story is...

You thought you had a virus and so you performed a repair installation of
Windows XP (or maybe clean installation) so you could get back to a
'bootable' state. Once you were able to boot, you assumed you could just
get back on and do a "System Restore" to go back to a point before you had
the problem. However - you cannot do that because you just obliterated all
restore points before the clean/repair installation. You replaced all the
system files (one way or another) and if it was a clean install - you
replaced *everything*.

Now there is the possibility that you have an OEM restoration/recovery
process and use that - maybe even a non-destructive one. However - it is
likely that even during such a process (which could only be supported by
those who created it - the OEM in question that is) that the built-in system
restore would be rendered useless for purposes of going back before it was
done.

In any case- although I like system restore - your solution will probably be
to turn it off/on so it removes all old restore points and rebooting so it
makes a new one and then it should function okay.

Of course - I am assuming a lot based off my version of events - please give
yours - the conclusion could be completely different. Wink
