Hi,

I'm trying to work on an IBM Lap top with Windows XP Pro. It is my husband's laptop, but I've been trying to set it up to VPN into my work. For whatever reason, my work requires users to change the name of the computer to a name my company will register. However, the laptop is registered in my husband's company's domain so I typed in a new computer name and entered my company's name 'XYZ' into the workgroup field. Which then brought up a user profile screen. I entered my work User ID and password and clicked ok. A message was then displayed saying that I needed to reboot my PC in order for the changes to take affect. Now when I am brougt to the Log On window, my husbands user name and password do not work. The user name and password I entered will not work either. All I have access to edit on this screen are the User Name & Password fields. The error message I receive is as follows: "The system could not log you on. Make sure your User Name and domain are correct, then type your password again.."

Does anyone have any idea how I can get back into this laptop??

Your husband's computer was setup for use on his company's domain network. His user name and password is associated with his company's domain.

When you setup the laptop for YOUR company's workgroup, you effectively took it off of HIS company's domain. Now, it doesn't know what to do.


In order to fix it, have your husband take the laptop back to his office, and tell the I.T. guys to put it back on the domain. Then he will be able to log in again.


Here is a tip: if it's a work computer, don't screw with it. I don't mean to be rude, but companies often have their computers set up a certain way, and tinkering with these things often break them. Check with both your company's I.T. dept as well as your husband's to see what you can and cannot do without causing problems.
