Keyboard problem

I have a very annoying problem with my wireless keyboard and mouse deskset.
When I am typing the keystrokes are either missed or repeated. The effect is
completely random in occurance and random effect on the letters. When
playing games the effect is also evident. I had this problem with my
previous deskset so can eliminate the make of deskset. My current deskset is
the Microsoft Wireless deskset 700 v2.0.

I have tried uninstalling all the HID and associated devices in device
manager forcing new installation of all drivers (including the USB drivers)
but the problem remains. I have tried new batteries and reconnecting the
keyboard but to no avail. I have tried different USB ports but no joy. The
receiver is about 10 inch away from the keyboard with nothing between them.
I can not see any error in the event logs and there is no problems with any
hardware.

I am at a loss as to why this is happening and I am wonderin if anyone out
there has any solutions to this problem.

My system is a Athlon 64 3000+ with 1GB RAM, 256MB nVidia g-force xf7300,
USB printer, scanner and joystick. 320GB Sata HDD in IDE mode. 1 x DVD
writer. 400W PSU.

Since you've had this problem with more than one desk set, maybe the problem
lies with your motherboard. If you use a USB or PS/2 keyboard, does the
problem re-occur?
Try unplugging you other USB devices for a while and see if the problem
occurs. When's the last time you updated your motherboard drivers?
Interference can come from anywhere- it doesn't have to be between the
receiver and the keyboard. Is the receiver near a monitor, wireless hub,
UPS, anything like that?

I will try what you suggest and get back. I will need to know for certain if
it is the motherboard to justify the cost of replacing it. (I might as well
upgrade everything if that is the case.)

As SC Tom said, the best thing to try is a wired USB keyboard.
If the problem persists, it could be a motherboard issue, possibly
a flakey keyboard buffer. You didn't say if there are problems
with the wireless mouse.

If the problem disappears with a wired keyboard, your wireless
system may be subjected to RF interference from another device
in the same frequency range. If you can borrow another sytem,
or a laptop, and use it with your wireless KB/mouse in the same
location, you could eliminate interference. You don't need to
install drivers on the borrowed sytem for this.

I think that I have cured the problem but do not like the solution. I have
the receiver right next to the keyboard under the desktop. (I have a slide
out shelf with the keyboard on.) It seems like either there is major
interference problems with these two sets or the range is a lot less than
stated. I do have a small issue with the mouse that is I have to have the
mouse close to the receiver for the mouse wheel to work properly but other
features are okay. Surely, with all things moving towards wireless or wifi,
that there should be better shielding, a greater range of frequencies, or the
option to change frequencies as standard with all available products to
prevent interference from other units. Main main problem appears to be range
and the signal being interfered with.
