We downloaded the KB905474 Genuine Advantage Notification critical update
today and wonder if we are supposed to see anything after the installation.
The program did download, install and then we were advised to restart the
computer - which we did. But we never saw any pop-up notification about
whether our Windows program was 'genuine,' etc.
Were we supposed to see anything? Are we supposed to check some place else
(similar to KB890830)?
Please advise and thank you.

Hi there Alice,

Actually no, the Microsoft Genuine Advantage tool just runs when you are
connecting to the Microsoft Downloads or the Microsoft Update site to verify
that you are using a Genuine copy of Microsoft Windows. The only time that
you will get a prompt is if the software is reporting your operating system
as invalid.

Hope this Helps!

Best Regards.

You should not see anything unless the validation tool thinks the install of
Windows is not legit. In that case it will pop up a message informing you
there is a problem and offer methods of acquiring genuine software.

#1- So, is our PC okay (did it pass the test)? We went back into the Critical
Update page again and there were no additional Critical Update downloads.
#2- We are using only the (old) Critical Update page and a week or so ago,
there was a fairly large Critical Update for the Win Media Player. If we are
just getting Critical Updates, shouldn't we just be getting Critical Updates
for WinXPsp2 and IE6? Or will we also get critical updates for associated
programs, such as the Win Media Player. (We thought that would only happen if
we decided to use the new Critical Update program that checks other Windows
programs.)

Yes your PC is OK...you passed the test. Your installation of Windows is
genuine.

Critical Updates normally apply to the Windows XP Operating System, Internet
Explorer 6 and Microsoft Office Updates. Microsoft could also release a
critical update for other components such as the Windows Media Player among
others.

Larry,

My Windows Genuine Advantage Noficiation has competely locked up my computer
(I'm sending this message from a different computer). The computer has a
completely genuine (and expensive) version of XP.

Is there a look-alike Virus? If not, is there any way to get rid of what
seems to be a vary nasty "bug" (or "feature" if you say so)?

Bob

P.S. My Windows computer is now very secure - no one can use it!

You've posted to a thread that dates from 2005. Doubt you'll get an
answer from Larry since he no longer peruses these newsgroups and is no
longer an MVP.

Try booting into a safemode /w networking, do a full virus scan. If that
doesn't work, do a system restore.
