I just had to do a complete reinstall from scratch of XP Pro SP2. In trying to set things up again as they used to be and reinstall all software necessary and functions I tried to remove a "read-only" attribute from a data folder which happens to be in the root directory on the C: drive. Clicking on the check box removes the check mark. Apply. Ok. Then when I come back to check the properties again, the attributes have the check mark once again in read-only. There has to be some way to make it vanish.

Also -- while I can retrieve a file from another computer "A" on my network and bring it in to a folder on this machine :C". I cannot from any other computer transfer a file to that same folder. "access denied" ... They transfer fine between machines A & B (running 2000 and 9Cool, but will not copy to the XP Pro machine. Any ideas?

For the first question:

All folders are marked 'Read-only' by default in Windows XP by design. You cannot change this. It doesn't mean the folder is actually 'Read-only'. Just a quirk of XP.

For the second question, can you confirm this is your setup?:

Computer 'A' is Windows 2k and can copy to/from the other computers

Computer 'B' is Windows 98 and can copy to Computer 'A', but can't copy to Computer 'C'. Can it copy from the other computers?

Computer 'C' is Windows XP and can copy from Computer 'A' but not from Computer 'B'.

Can Computer 'C' copy to the other computers? Can the other computers copy from Computer 'C'?

Does sound confusing doesn't it?
A is 2000 ... B is 98 ... and C is XP.

My problem was that XP could copy to and from all other machine ...
2000 could copy from XP but not to XP. Same with 98. 2000 and 98 could copy to and from each other with no problem. I hope that's clear.

In any case ... after a lot of hunting and clicking ... I eventually found the solution buried a little deeper in XP file security settings. And now the copying is working okay in all directions. I just hope I remember the procedure for the next time I run into this problem.

Good one, Al. Glad you got it sorted. Was it the way Permissions were set?

In general ... yeah. Some of it is under sharing ... some of it is under control panel\folder options (and goes against what is marked as "recommended") ... and there was another setting somewhere else (can't recall exactly where at the moment -- I've gotta go through this and write down the steps). ... It would be nice if MS had clustered everything connected with this in one place ... Hah!
