Recently (I think following a system update) the "Safely remove hardware"
icon has disappeared from my system tray. Rebooting the system doesn't bring
it back. I'd like to get it back, or at least find some other way to execute
its function. Any help will be appreciated.

Try this from the Start-Run box to execute the function:

RUNDLL32.EXE shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL hotplug.dll
