Please advise as to the correct setting to allow for multiple open Windows
which I may then close individually. When I click the X of one Window, all
the other Windows close and I'm left with only the desktop.
Thanks.

Can I ask what program you are referring to? This doesn't happen with
separate apps, nor does it happen in a browser like Firefox if the user
has multiple windows open instead of tabs.

Assuming you're referring to closing tabs in an IE7 or IE8 window, click on
the X on the right side of the tab (cf.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie7/tour/tabs/) or use the keyboard
shortcut CTRL+W to close a tab.

Why do you even respond if you are so totally clueless? Maybe you should
hang out at Microsoft.public.windowsxp.newusers and just read for awhile.

Thank you for your reply.

I have attempted your remedy with no success. Perhaps I should be more
precise. When I click on a hyperlink in a Google News Alert story, for
example, a new window opens. After reading the story, I would then close the
window by clicking on the X. It is at that point that ALL other windows are
closed including the Gmail window that contained the email with the hyperlink.

This problem is new. I didn't change any settings including the Tools area
that you recommended.

I would appreciate further help. Thanks.

Well, you offered no suggestion I see.

And what program do you know of that closes ALL windows when clicking an
X in ONE window? None I know of. Almost all programs except browsers
only use one window. When I have Firefox open, I use tabs. IF for some
reason I open multiple windows in FF, closing one window by clicking the
X does NOT close the whole program. The SAME thing happens with IE.

So, since you know it all, reply back with an answer!

I was not addressing the OP I was addressing you. There was no mention of
any programs. It seems others that addressed the issue have done so well.

The OP said "multiple open Windows." This could refer to IE or another
browser, or it could refer to multiple folders open, like in My Computer, or
it could be multiple (different) programs open in windowed mode. Why jump
Terry for asking a simple apropos question? Seems to me that you are the
clueless one, IMHO.

No mention of programs? I think YOU are the one who should never
respond! What creates "windows" but a program! You have no clue!

The ones who responded added nothing more than I did when making
reference to browser windows. Those are the only programs I know of that
create multiple windows and each individual window is closed by clicking
the X, which DOESN'T close the whole program, but only the window in focus.

Class dismissed.

If you have no knowledge of an issue then let others that do respond.

It would be better if you stop trying to be a big person hiding behind a
keyboard.

You come in here bitching about an answer and yet you never offered any
advice at all. Because you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

See ya little jake. If you care to continue this conversation in
