I have a Brother MFC-5840CN fax/printer/scanner. Everything works fine
except scanning. I spent two hours on the phone with Brother Tech Support
trying various solutions including changing my registry. I was shocked to
hear this, but they said that XP is simply incompatible with 5840's scanning
software, and that I have to get Microsoft to fix XP (!). Now, a new printer
will cost me half the price of a phone call to Microsoft. Does anyone have
any suggestions on this?

(P.S. Situations like this remind me of the final scene in OFFICE SPACE,
where they demolish the printer.)

All I can say is that the driver are here:

I don't know if the scanner functions are usable under this package.

There was a firmware update for this model, dated 10/02/2008.
Was it accomplished? It did have to do with scanning not working.
