Mark it as read and then try deleting it. If that doesn't work just ignore
it.

Try using shortcut keys
I found that by keying "ALT' then "E" then "Y" it would delete each message
one by one.
I MAY BE WAY OFF BASE HERE... PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU DISAGREE WITH ME
I think what's happening is that the database is getting it's messages
confused. When you first started having the problem did you notice that it
looked as if the computer was actually deleting the messages, but they still
appeared in the deleted items folder? According to the database, the deleted
items folder is empty. What we're having a problem is with clearing out the
messages names from the folder. I believe that is why we're getting the
'unknown error' message. The computer doesn't see that WE can still see the
message headers in the folder.

Try what I've suggested. Since I did the shortcut keys, I've not had anymore
problems with doing a MASS delete of my deleted items folder.
Everything works as it should now.

Let me know if this works for you.

Take care,

Pamela

What you can do for now is to ignore it.
Microsoft has not released a permanent fix for this bug.
If it gets to the point where you can't use Windows Mail,
temporarily switch to an alternate mail client, like web mail,
or Microsoft Outlook or the free Mozilla Thunderbird.

The "Alt" "E" "Y" method works!

The "ALT" method works for me also.
Thanks.

This worked for me, too. It looks like this is a known problem for MANY
months prior to release, and I found nothing in the microsoft kb about it.

Thanks, The shortcut keys did work one by one. Once all messages were deleted
by using the shortcut keys, I added deleted messages to the deleted folder
and was able to use the delete all deleted messages button. Thanks again.

I am having problems with the same message but it concerns and email in my
outbox and it won't let any other emails that I have created after this
"problem email" go out. What do I do? I tried your method but it doesn't do
anything.

Thanks in advance.

Once you get a 'ghost' email stuck in the outbox, and it won't let you
send out anything, your options are quite limited.
If you don't feel comfortable doing the database deletion/regeneration
method that has been widely discussed in this newsgroup, then your
only remaining option is to install and use a different email program.
Mozilla Thunderbird is free:
http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/

As Gary said, your options are very limited.

Try repairing the database with WMUtil from www.oehelp.com

That probably won't work, but it's worth a try because it's easy and the
program is free. If you're a glutton for punishment you can try the method
below, but Gary's suggestion is a lot easier.

There are two copies of WindowsMail.MSMessageStore, One in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows Mail
and one in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows Mail\Backup\New
If you delete both of these the database will be rebuilt. However, while no
messages should be lost, some may be downloaded again and you may lose some
record of which have been read. I recommend that you only do this when they
are causing you trouble, like when they are in the Outbox. Otherwise I now
just mark them as read and ignore them.

May I suggest selecting all messages then doing the "alt" "e" "y" then enter
for windows vista!

I believe the problem is "Windows" and especially "Vista", I wish I had never
heard of it, my XP was working great.

It's not a Vista problem, it's a Windows Mail problem (separate programming
team).

Have you tried marking the message as read and then deleting it? That's
what I've been doing and so far it has always worked. Other things:

Try repairing the database with WMUtil from www.oehelp.com

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows Mail
