Hello there - I finally managed to download and install windows defender, but
now I cannot start the darn thing. A window pops up and says "Application
failed to initialize: 0x800106ba. A problem caused Windows Defender service
to stop. To start the service, restart your computer (which I did) or search
Help and Support on how to start the service manually." Does anyone have any
tips on how to get started? Thanks,

Defender is built into Vista so if you dl'ed and install the beta2, I
believe that's only for XP.

Defender installed when I installed Vista, but I too get the same error code.
Also get a box that states that a DLL is not loading properly.

Not that defender is really needed, but it would be nice if it worked.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Also, after a month, today Defender actually had a successful automatic
update. All the others failed so far until today. It updated today with
definition 1.14.1530.8 for defender KB915597. But after rebooting Defender
still will not start. I get the same error code 0x800106ba.

Have not seen this issue covered in the help files so far...

I have never got the defender working on XP Professional SP2 at my office.
But works fine on Vista and on XP Home SP2 at home.

If you go into task manager, select "services" tab, as well as the services
button. You will then be brought to a window with a list of "services."
Navigate to Windows defender, click on it, then on the top left, you should
see the option to start manually. Do that, and then open windows defender.

Same error message for me every time I started vista. Though I did find defender in the task manager, it was only a temporary solution; something I'd have to do every time I started vista. Who wants to do that? Confused I just wanted the error message to go away.
The solution for me was to change the behavior of Windows defender's service. In your search box built into vista type "services." There should be a utility by the same name (it's icon is two cogs). Once open, scroll down to windows defender and right click it. Click properties. The first (far left) tab should be labeled "general." There is a pull-down menu for startup type. Switch it's behavior from whatever it currently is to "automatic." On the same window (below startup type) is the service status. Here you can do what you could do (for me) from task manager: manually start the service. This will run the service this time. The Smile previous instructions (setting startup type to Automatic) will ensure you don't need to do this again. Should work from now on every time you start Vista.

Exclamation Exclamation Very much fed up of this error, just try this to solve the error of windows defender failed to initialize.
Go to control panel ->Under Security option click on Check this computer's security status=> under that drop down malware Protection One option will come, i forgot, but can say that it is to check which firewall protection is currently running, if you see windows defender status it must be off, just click it to switch on.
well this should resolve this issue.
I was having same problem i did it so i am posting this
ok thank you
