removing mcafee

McAfee security system, which came with my computer, is causing all kinds of
problems with my email, so I am trying to uninstall it to replace it with
something else, like Avast or AVG. However, after using computer's Add/remove
program, followed by the removal tool from McAfee, I get an error message
saying, 'Cleanup Failed. Cleanup is already running.'
Initially, McAfee's helpline told me to uninstall and reinstall McAfee and
that would solve my problems but it only made them worse. (This was after
walking me thru a zillion other steps, wasting my entire morning and ruining
my day!)
McAfee told me I should just use their removal tool, not Add/Remove to
uninstall and they also sent me a link to reinstall.
So now I am trying to get rid of McAfee altogether and have not tried
Add/Remove, only the removal tool they sent me, but I get that 'cleanup
failed' error message. Help! What should I do now?

The removal tool works but firstly you must stop all McAfee programs from
running.

Make sure MacAfee is not running and the email integration is disabled. Also try deleting in Safe mode using the tool they supplied

How do I stop McAfee from running? By removing it with 'Remove Programs'? And
how do I disable email integration?

It's a long time since I used it so my terminology may be wrong but I'm sure
you'll get my drift!

Right-click the icon in the system tray, which should open the security
center (or similar wording). Now stop/exit/disable any of the modules that
are running.

McAfee doesn't give option of disabling it; maybe it did in the good old days.

I don't know if you've already solved your problem but I just now solved the
same one you are having. You can stop Mcafee by going into the internet
option on your internet and turning off the phishing filter. That should stop
it. Sorry if this came too late for you!

Thanks all who responded. I got rid of McAfee (100 bucks, 3-yr contract down
the drain) and installed Avast. Now running smoothly and keeping my fingers
crossed.

YOu could of also used a mcafee uninstaller too. Very helpful when mcafee cannot uninstall on its own. Don't get confused with mcafee uninstaller program. again there is a tool to remove mcafee.

MCPR is the file name i found it on mcafee website. it totally cleans out mcafee from your computer properly.

I know i know it's too late but i figured knowledge is power.

Getting rid of McAfee can be even worse than getting rid of Norton.

In my book, either one qualifies as a "Virus".
(a program that bloats your PC, constantly interferes with Windows operations and is almost impossible to remove)

But for the people who can't seem to figure out how to "Shutdown all running programs".....there is a neat little utility that I have used for years.

It's called "End It All 2".
It gives you a list of all running programs on your computer. Certain system files are locked and cannot/should not be shut down, if Windows is to continue to run.

By right clicking on other file names, like your Anti-Virus programs, etc., you can mark them for Shutdown/Kill.

I use this program before installing any new software packages and before running Nero to burn a CD/DVD.
