After a minimal installation of Vista Ultimate is done, how much disk
space is taken by it?

My RAM is 1 GB. Is there a table or a formula relating the amount of
RAM and the diskspace taken?

8 to 12 GB is too huge for a backup on a 4.7 DVD. If there is no
minimal installation available "on board" of Vista setup, I will have
to install it with the third party tool "vLite". Or are there known
issues with vLite?

There is no minimal, maximum or custom installation of Vista. There is one
default install. Depending upon your installed RAM, the initial used space
may be from 8 - 12 gig, with nothing else installed.

The default install, in your case, will create a 1 gig pagefile and a 1 gig
hiberfil.sys (hibernation file) in addition to the base Vista install. I
have 2 gig of RAM so I have a 2 gig pagefile and a 2 gig hiberfil.sys file.

These files are NOT backed up during a backup.

I do not know if the Vista backup program will span DVD's. I do know that
Acronis TrueImage HOME 10.0.4942 will. It is a much better solution than
that which is supplied with Vista. It costs about $50.00.

Ok, now I understand the rule.

Good advice. I use Acronis and I am content with them.

Thanks of your patience.

Get a bigger hard drive and transfer the system over. There is no other
solution that would be practical.

Vista's disk tool can only expand a volume if there is free space
immediately following it as shown in disk manager. OP has stated they only
want a 24GB volume, which is impractical for the operating system. If
there's room to expand, this is certainly an option, but I'd hazard a guess
that it's not.
