It would be helpful if you included the complete error message.
Right-click on it, copy, then paste into a reply here.
Who is your ISP?

The host 'smtp' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the
server name correctly.
Subject 'test message', Account: 'pop3', Server: 'smtp', Protocol: SMTP,
Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

know what you think.

The main thing wrong is that you have an improper name for the
outgoing (SMTP) server. The server name is not "smtp".
Your ISP should have a web page showing all the email account settings.
If your AT&T is the former SBC, and you have their Yahoo mail service,
the settings are here:
http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=10918

Do not use the automatic tool mentioned there, use the manual settings.

"SMTP" is not a valid mail server name.
Who provides your email service? Or to ask that question another way,
what is the part of your email address after the @ symbol?
Your mail provider will typically have a web page that shows how to
set up an email program. If you need more help, tell us the name of
your email service provider.

US-based free Yahoo accounts have webmail access only, no POP
access. Windows Mail handles POP mail but not Yahoo webmail.
There are two Yahoo solutions:

1. How did you access Yahoo mail before? If you are happy with
webmail via your browser, you can continue to use that.

2. Pay Yahoo to get their premium "Mail Plus" service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/overview/index.html
and use the special settings for that service:
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mail/original/mailplus/pop/pop-14.html

If you are OK with using a non-Yahoo email address, you have three other
solutions that will work with Windows Mail:
* Use the email address assigned to you by your ISP.
* Get a free Gmail account.
* Get a free Hotmail/Live account.

Better, thanks, and the bad news is that you probably can't use that
directly with Windows Mail. Standard Yahoo accounts just won't work.

You need to either use a 3rd party tool called YPOP or pay Yahoo for their
enhanced service, which will work with Windows Mail and similar POP clients.

Do you get an error message when you try to send? If so,
right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

I have no idea what you are doing wrong but I can tell you that if you do not post
the error or description of your system and mail setup and you also hijack someone
else's thread then my answer to you is "I have no idea"

I normally use yahoo or hotmail. But to contact the seller on craigslist I
had to use windows live mail. After I clicked the send button I had to put my
name, then my email address. I put my yahoo email account. Then I had to put
something on POP3 and SMTP. Then the error message came up. I changed my mind
about using my yahoo account so I changed it to my hotmail account. I saw
that you told some people having the same problem that if they put their
yahoo account they have to pay yahoo or get a hotmail or gmail account. And
also that the email provider has a page the gives you the SMTP. But I can't
find it. I used their help option but it didn't have an answer for my problem

Ok. When you click on a link on a website like Craigslist, it is a mailto:
link, and it should open your default email program.

If you prefer using Hotmail or Yahoo webmail, maybe the following links
may help.... (I can't vouch for them)
http://www.winhelponline.com/articles/224/1/Register-Windows-Live-Hotm...-with-t
http://www.pchell.com/support/yahoomail.shtml

If you wish to use Windows Live Mail (WLM) and your Hotmail email account,
it's pretty simple.

Open Windows Live Mail.
Click on "Tools" - "Accounts" - "Add.."
Click on "Email account"
Click on "Next"
Enter your Hotmail email address and password in the correct boxes...
Enter your name as you would like it to be shown...
You won't need to enter any server names or settings..
Click on "Next"
Click on "Finish"

Now make sure that WLM is the default email program...
Click on the Vista "Start" button - "Default Programs" - "Set your default
programs".
highlight "Windows Mail", then click on "Choose defaults for this
program".
click on "Select all" to make sure the MAILTO is selected
click on "Save"

Now it should work.
