Wireless Network Continuously Dropping (Since Vista)

Just recently installed Vista Ultimate 32bit to my Dell E1405 laptop
(Intel 3945ABG WiFi card). Downloaded/installed all the latest drivers
from Dell's site. For the first three days i didn't have a single
dropped connection. Now over the past 4 days i will be online for a few
hours sometimes, sometimes less, and then constant dropped connections
start. Usually about every 5 minutes or so. Sometimes it won't
reconnect for several minutes before finnaly coming back on.
Occasionally my network (or the others in my area) won't even show up
for that period of time. Sometimes my network will show, but be called
"Unnamed Network". Internet still works on my XP machines, no changes
to properties. Worked great prior to Vista. Router is a Linksys 54G
With speedboost. Any help would be great.

Thanks for the feedback, sounds like you have the EXACT same issue as
me. It had occurred to me that it -could- be the router, but somehow i
didn't really put much thought into that. Went to their site and the
latest firmware was still pretty old, i upgraded it anyways (was
running HyperWRT which is second party, but still older). Pulled out
the box to find my version, and on it says clearly it only supports XP,
and it's fairly old so we might have found our issue.

i have the same problem with my netgear rangemax (hardware version v1).
i'm loosing connection to the access point - sometimes after hours,
other times after just minutes. when doublechecking with netgear, i saw
that the device is not compatible with vista... probably the device
discovery from vista messes with the router.

once i'm loosing connection, the device can still be seen when searching
for wireless networks, but called "Unnamed Network" instead of my
network id. in this state, no device can reconnect to the wlan until i
turn the device off and on again.

have you tried linksys.com for a newer firmware for your 54g?

Updated to the latest firmware (4/2006, wow so new). My router is listed
under Vista ready on their site (version isn't noted on their site). I
was online for about 3 hours, thought the firmware had fixed it, then 5
connection drops within about a half hour. Continuous tcpip and dhcp
messages in my event viewer saying i have been assigned an ip and
working correctly, and yet it obviously is not working properly. Posted
at the Linksys forums, nothing so far.

And other ideas? Is it pretty safe to assume my router is not Vista
compatible despite what Linksys says? Obviously i would value XP over
Vista so long as i could remain online for longer than 2 minutes...

I have the same problem, I'm using a DLink wireless router and every 5 to 10
minutes or so the internet will disconnect and reconnect, and it's annoying
having AIM pop up saying it got disconnected. I have absolutely no idea
what's wrong...

Could you provide your D-Link model number and firmware version? If it's
older, you might need to upgrade to the latest firmware.

Also, please check your Event Logs (Start, right-click Computer, Manage;
Event Viewer, Windows Logs, System) for any errors or warnings that may have
occurred when you get the disconnection.

I have been having similar problems, and discovered tonight a newer 3945abg
driver on the Intel website. It is 11.1.0.86...I don't know if it will fix
the dropped connections (which primarily happen for me coming out of standby
mode), but this is the first time since I got the computer that the signal
strength is showing as excellent.

I also have been having network drop problems with vista x64. Im using a
linksys WRT54GL router with 4.30.9 firmware and al linksys WMP54Gv4
wireless PCI adapter with Ralink 2500 3.2.0.0 x64 drivers. Linksys
doesn't support x64 drivers for their card yet. I've found that i'm
getting an ICV error, CRC errors, and a WEP error with Ralink's
included Utility and my IPv6 is limited. I'm at the end of the rope and
I'm very frustrated with dropped connections and slow speeds.

I looked at the event logs, they say "ntp client was unable to set a manual
peer to use as a time source because of DNS resolution error on
"time.window.com,0x9. cClient will try again in 15 min......

Does this give you a clue?

I am convinced that no one who has this problem ever really fixed it.
It creeps up on you after a few months, and then happens more and more
frequently. I have been through all the forums on this. Those who do not
have the problem are only guessing as to it's cause. MICROSOFT has never
really addressed the issue.

After suffering for months, I just gave up, and am awaiting my pre
order of 2 WINDOWS 7 DVDs. I am hoping the problem will then just go
away.

For now, I set aside my top of the line Alienware laptop, and went back
to my old DELL XP laptop. XP DOES NOT HAVE THIS PROBLEM. IT NEVER
DISCONNECTS.

I am convinced of the following:

1. This is not a router issue. (Firmware or hardware)
2. This is not a computer hardware issue.
3. This is not a wireless adapter issue. (Hardware or driver related)
4. THIS IS A VISTA ISSUE.

My Alienware laptop is not old, and after searching, I discovered that
I already had the latest wireless drivers. My router is a relatively new
Belkin n type, recommended by DELL for it's VISTA compliance.

Note that for the first several months of using the new laptop, I never
had a drop out. This is a problem that crept in over time, as it has
with thousands of others out there. (Based on the forums I've searched.)
This is only a wireless VISTA issue. My hardwired VISTA desktop has
NEVER dropped out, nor has my OLD wireless DELL XP laptop.

On another note, I had the same problem with my MEDIA CENTER EXTENDER,
connected to my TV. When using it wirelessly, I would constantly have to
reset the router. It became unusable. Once I hard wired it to the
router, there was NEVER 1 DROP OUT.

I’m starting to think that some WINDOWS UPDATE, (security related), may
have caused this.

VISTA & wireless - Not perfect together.

Let’s hope 7 solves it!
