Windows cannot connect to the printer. Access is denied.

I'm trying, desparately, to print from my Vista Home Premium laptop to a
shared printer on my home wireless network. The shared printer is connected
to an XP Home machine. That machine is hard-wired (via a LAN cable) to the
wireless router. I can "see" the printer I want to use but when trying to
connect to it, I get the error message "Windows cannot connect to the
printer. Access is denied." I'd be grateful for any help.

Can you open the remote machine and open the remote printers folder? Is the
shared printer listed?
(you may need to add the Run verb to the Start menu) Start, Run,
\\XPMACHINE

from a command line what is the result when you request the directory
contents on the XP machines print$ share?

dir \\XPMACHINE\print$

Yes, Alan, I can open the remote machine and the remote printers folder. The
shared printer is listed.

From a command line, when I request the contents of the directory on the XP
machine's print$ share, I get the sentence "Access is denied." Thanks for
your interest.

The client machine must have read access to the XP share in order to obtain
the driver files for the printer. This is why you are getting the access
denied error, Because the XP machine is denying access to the Vista
machine. You will need to reconfigure the XP machine to allow this.

The XP machine is configured to allow access to the Vista machine. I can
access shared files on the XP machine from the Vista machine. I have loaded
driver files onto the Vista machine but that did not improve the situation.

You do not have access to print$. You will not be able to get the driver
files from the XP machine until that is resolved.

Precisely--which brings us full circle. At this point, I do not believe that
the problem lies with the configuration of the XP machine. I believe it to
be a flaw within Vista and I'm simply trying to find a workaround.

Does the Everyone group have read access to the print$ share on the XP
machine?

Computer management / System Tools / Shared Folders / Shares

find the print$ share, right click properties, Share Permission

also verify that the directory points to c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers
(I assume XP is installed on C: this will be different if the install is not
default).

If Everyone is there make sure you have enabled the guest account on the XP
machine

I had mentioned, I thought, in previous posts that I can print on the shared
printer from another XP machine on the network. I just can't print from a
Vista machine.

Apparently, I do not know how to get to a security page on the XP machine
that has "Everyone" on it. When I go through computer managent/system
tools/shared folders/shares and right click on print$ I get two options:
"Refresh" and "Help". Right clicking on anything further up the tree yields
"Help" or "New Window From Here."

There do appear to be drivers at the windows\system32\spool\drivers location.

Since the XP machine is HOME I do not think the permissions dialog is

Run the XP Network Sharing Wizard again and see if this sets the security
properly on the share.

Is the printer you are sharing one that has inbox XP drivers?

In the meantime let's at least get the printer working for you.

Create a Local Printer on Vista, Create a Local Port in the form
\\XPMACHINE\Printsharename (this will send the files using the redirector
rather than the RPC service). Install the Vista driver for the device.

You can print because print$ access is only needed for the print drivers.

Thank you, Alan. I can finally print from the Vista laptop to the shared
printer on the XP machine. One down, one to go, I guess.

I did run the Network Setup Wizard again on the XP machine. The Vista
machine still has no access to the printer that way. Interestingly, in
Network Places, I clicked on the link to show computers in the network and
got a message that said: "MSHOME is not accessible. You might not have
permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of the
server to find out if you have access permissions. The network path was not
found." I have no idea what the heck this means. The XP machine that
yielded that message is the administrator machine and I'm its operator. Go
figure.

Thank you, Alan. My problem description matched Steve's exactly. Your
solution worked perfectly. My printer is a Brother HL-5150D laser. No one
at Brother or Gateway had any idea how to resolve this very frustrating

I have a similar problem but my printer is conected to the machine with vista
and I can't print from a machine with xp, please help

run the Network Configuration Wizard on XP.

make sure the machines are joined to the same workgroup

if you have user accounts one machine, make sure the same users and same
passwords exist on the other machine.

the following Create a Local Printer on Vista, Create a Local Port in the
form
\\XPMACHINE\Printsharename (this will send the files using the redirector

Which machine is sharing the printer?

Did you get the access denied message when performing the

dir \\remote\print$

operation?

if you still get access denied, verify you can view the shares

net view \\remote

this will list the print share and any shared folders.

If you get 'Access is denied' when you try to set up a Vista PC to a printer
attached to an XP PC on a network this works:

On the Vista machine:
Create a Local Printer ,
Select Local Port
A box pop up for the port name.
Enter:\\XPMACHINE\Printsharename
Install the Vista driver for the device- if you tried to install this
printer earlier the driver is probably already there

Why? I don't know. But it does.

Thank-you for this support post! As soon I replaced my Home Vista machine
that I was using to share a printer on my home network, the Windows Vista
Home Premium SP1 decided to stop printing. "Windows cannot connect to the
printer. Access is denied." After several hours of trying, all types of
work arounds, including moving the printer to another machine running the
same operating system as its replacement, WIndows XP Home Edition 2002 SP3,
it only took 5 mins to fix the problem after finding this article.

Thanks very much. I was having the same issue, only printing from a Windows 7
Ultimate 32 bit PC to an EPSON Stylus C88+ on a Windows XP Home PC. I have
been trying to fix this issue for awhile and called EPSON, who couldn't solve
the problem and told me I had to contact Microsoft. But, this has finally
fixed the promblem.
