Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>music_pictures_video (more info?)

Every time I try to open up a video in WMP, it get this error saying:

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use; you
might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy
settings might not be correct."

The video still plays in the background, but I can't hear sound. I can't
listen to my music in Itunes either. I'm pretty sure that that it's not the
first thing in the error message., and the file is stored on my computer. As
for the third one, I'm not sure.

It also says I'm not on a network, when I was yesterday.

This all started when I downloaded AIM 6.0.

Can anyone please tell me if there was ever a solution to this problem. Because I am having the exact same problem, and after googling my heart out I remain at a loss as to what to do. There seems to be no solution, so if anyone knows anything about one, I would be eternally grateful for some help. Confused

I HAVE THE ANSWER. after searching a while I found a fix that acutally worked
You go to : Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Sound and then something should pop up saying certain enhancements are interfering with something Terminate the program? Click yes and your problem should be solved

Edit: more better explanation

I registered on this forum just to say the BIGGEST thank you. This was driving me nuts for two days now, and your post helped me out, exactly like you said. Thanks SOO much.

I just wanted to say I don't think it was AIM because this happened randomly. I didn't update AIM and I didn't install anything Instant Messenger related (I even tried uninstalling AIM because thats what it was when this happened to me a couple months ago.)

Anyways thanks so much again!

Thank you so much. You were dead on the money. That nasty problem is over now.

Stupid aim... That's another reason NOT to use aim. Skype ftw!

I receive the same error message

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

but when I tried opening Sounds in Control Panel, nothing poped-up.
I'm not using any version of AIM.

This happens only with .wmv files. .avi,.mpg, etc are fine.
I'm not hearing any sound nor video.
My iTunes is fine.
I cannot be sure when this started coz I've not played wmv files for quite a while.
But wmv works well in Media Player Classic n Picasa n others.
I'm using Vista.

HELP!!!!! This is driving me crazy!
