It doesn't "solve" anything, it just gives you a temporary respite.

i went through nearly all the messages in this thread and was considering
moving my mail folders... then, on a whim, i marked the message in question
as read (it was surely spam i didn't want to open), and voila! i was able to
delete it without a hitch. not sure if anyone else has tried this, but it
worked for me. go figure

If you update to Vista SP1, then the problem is resolved.

If you install Vista SP1 or Vista SP2, then that will fix the issue also.
