There isn't a whole lot you can do if you can't delete it. You can try
using my WMUtil program to compact and repair the database and see if that
helps. See www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/

Anyone file a bug with Microsoft? I and many others have this problem. This
is very annoying. Now that I upgraded to RTM, I don't have the link to file
a bug.

I am very annoyed with this bug, but I don't know how to report it either. I
had messages I thought I sent but they get stuck also, however I can send or
delete them manally. Maybe I will take my computer back to Best Buy, its
still under warranty.

You can close WinMail and then move the entire contents of the message store
directory to another directory and that will start it up fresh. You can
then drag the eml files (messages) back into the WinMail folders.
Microsoft is unlikely to fix any bugs in WinMail anytime soon, as it has a
very low priority. So workarounds and 3rd party programs are going to be
required, just as they were with OE.

Its fixed, I was on the phone earlier with a microsoft support guy and he
wanted me to re-install windows!! I spent 4 hrs looking for help and calling
and posting, Seems as if they at least made the fix easier to find, that
would be a start.....
I learned about this discussion group so it wasn't a complete waste of time

I'm glad you got it fixed.

I had that error before and this is NOT a problem with any Windows Mail
folder, but with corrupt database file
%Userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows
Mail\WindowsMail.MSMessageStore. Microsoft tools cannot repir it. The
only way i know to repair it is exporting all email from the store and
removing this file and it's backup copy from Backup folder, or maybe the
whole Windows Mail folder.

I think you do not have to get rid of any files except the two
..smessagestore files. The one under the Windows Mail directory and the one
under the Windows Mail\backup\new directory.
I'll do some more tests.

There are several ways to get to Windows Explorer:
1. Start, Computer. This will open Windows Explorer.
2. If you are a keyboard person, Windows key + E.
3. Start, All Programs, Accessories, Windows Explorer.
Hope this helps.

Today I had that problem again (message stuck in Outbox folder).
Unfortunately WMTool (which is in fact only GUI port to esentutl.exe) do
not helped. Finally I deleted WindowsMail.MSMessageStore file. While
restarting, Windows Mail automatically recovered it from a backup file
(it must be a recent backup in Backup folder, of course) and the problem
was gone.
Additionally I must say, in Outbox folder was many orphan message files
with 0 byte size. So, there must be some serious problem with WM
database engine...

So deleting just the WindowsMail.MSMessageStore file cleared
the stuck (undeletable) messages from your Outbox?
Strange, it didn't do that for me.
I concur that WMTool did not help, in fact it made the problem worse.

Explained below:
"Navigate to that folder via Windows Explorer."
If you don't know how to find Windows Explorer, see my other
post in this thread, posted about 5 minutes ago.
You can delete a file by right-clicking on it, and you'll see
the Delete option.

Maybe because your backup file was corrupted too.
Here is another solution which is something differrent (mail drap&drop):

That other workaround is too labor-intensive.
I'm not about to spend 45 minutes doing that when I have no
guarantee that the same problem won't crop up again tomorrow.
We need to find the root cause first.

You can do what I'm doing: watchful waiting.
Frankly, I'd advise you to hold off on attempting to employ
the purported fixes that are floating around, because we
don't know yet what's causing the root problem.
Why go to the trouble of employing a laborious 'fix' when
the same issue can recur over and over again.

Yeah, I wrote WMUtil because the users couldn't figure how to use esentutl.
I'm going to be adding some new stuff to it.
The zero byte files in the outbox are a known problem.
