Vista no install "Not properly setup in bios???"

I go to install Vista like this
1) turn off computer
2)Take out all hard drives, swich over IDE cables add in new harddrive
New harddrive is on IDE 1 set to master
IDE 2 is my DVD drive
3)power on pc and enter bios
4)make sure booting from either dvd drive, or HDD-0
5)start installing vista, accept user agreements
6) Error, not setup up properly in bios "does not meet criteria"??? wtf
7)restart enter bios tweak settings, does nothing

I'm running 1.512Gb ram, 1.83 proc, 300 gig Hdd partitioned to 40Gbs for
vista, and it wont install to the allocated drive, it's 40 gig's formatted in
NTFS

I have no idea what's going wrong

Would help if you posted which version of Vista you are trying to install
and what computer or cpu you have.

RC2, 32 bit Vista version from DVD
2.16 GHz, 1.50 GB of ram
not sure what else you want to know...

Neither do we because you wont' tell us the error or your Vista build. John
asked you and I did independently because Builds matter. Those of us who
have seen all of them can tell you in detail they matter and I can show you
that setup is different in glitches in builds. Particularly after 5472 with
false error messages that aren't true much like the info from the Vista
Upgrade advisor as to hdw you need and driver updates you might need but do
not.

Need more info and also which build of Vista--the number of the build. I
appreciate what you've given us but in the bios setup is your DVD drive on
automatic? How exactly and what settings did you tweak in bios setup?

Make sure you have your cable configuration correct in the box and for good
measure reseat all the cables securely (unplug) all of the connections that
are pin connections--to mobo to HD to your DVD drive although I know you've
done it recently but there could still be oxidation somewhere you have not
unplugged for a while.

I think the erro has more info than:
Error, not setup up properly in bios "does not meet criteria"??? wtf

1) What exactly does the Vista setup say that you need if anything? Are you
getting a setup error. I have seen Vista frequently starting with build
5472 give false setup errors and refuse to setup when running setup from the
XP desktop on a dual or multi boot yet install flawlessly when you reboot.
The bios will then dictate the drive letters and change them but that's no
big deal to me whatsoever. When you're on the XP boot, the drive letters
will be seen as the original, and the new labels will show up on the Vista
boot.

2) Are you running setup from XP? If so see if typing eventvwr.msc in run
box and click on applications and then systems and see if you get any useful
error info using the down error.

3) Are you running setup from a restart instead of XP?

4) What shows up in the bios for that 300 GB HD?

5) If you're running Vista setup from a burned iso DVD, go to bios setup and
make sure with your space bar key that you have that optical drive on
"automatic"--there is not going to be and "on" but there will be an "off"
and several other settings you can run through that you don't want to leave
using your space bar.a There is also a chance that your DVD writer will be
ID'd as a CD writer and that doesn't matter as long as it's on "automatic"
and ID'd correctly otherwise as to make and model.

I assume when you say "put in" a 300 GB that it's an internal drive. To
setup Vista and boot to Vista with some external HDs, it can be MOBO
dependent and some older mobos will not support that.
