So, I put a copy of XP in a Virtual Machine, fresh with SP2 and all the
hotfixes... I can copy from the vista machine from within the XP
environment inside the VM. Has any one else encountered such issues?
I am not sure what the differences could be between a fresh install,
and one that was tainted with an anti-virus that is now uninstalled,
but still unable to copy from vista.

Hmm... I think you're running into the same problems that MDaniel was having
with copying files to a FAT32 and back before it would let him copy to a
Vista. I would suggest trying to copy a file to a USB stick (fat32) and back
to XP after you've uninstalled the AV Software.
Have you tired installing AV on the XP Virtual machine and seeing if it
stops file transfers?
I'm at bit of a loss as well. I've got to read up on ADS more before I can
really guess as to what might be causing the problem and what might fix it.
I did get word that KAV will be releasing 2 new version of KAV in Feb. One
for Vista and one for XP/2003 to use IF you have Vista in your environment.
At least one AV company is aware of the problem...

I remember reading somewhere, and now I don't know where that another
stream was being created (by a microsoft service I think) for files
that indicates the last date/time it was scanned... I cannot for the
life of me remember where I read it though.
I wonder if that has something to do with it... I suppose it is
possible that the filecopy from a vista computer could strip out the
added stream since it would not necessarily be relavent on the target
of a copy.
I will round up a thumbdrive to see if I can copy from that (ie, from
an XP machine try to copy from the thumbdrive that is shared from a
vista machine).
I really don't think this is a permission issue... if it were, then why
would not having the antivirus affect it?

Once you have a file that doesn't copy, it appears that it will not copy
that file from then on... at least that has been my experience.
No resolution yet.

Thanks John
I would like to agree with you there and indeed I had thought that until a
folder containing the installation file for office 2007 and a text of the key
(approx 450 MB) which I had been trying to move for hours, out of the blue
moved as you would normally expect in a matter of seconds and subsiquently
installed without error. Then to rub salt into wounds I now cannot move that
folder or individual file again. This happened without changing any settings.
Also I picked up on the NTFS/FAT32 points of this thread and formatted a
10GB HD to FAT32 to use as a 'catalyst' to move files to then from but
this made no difference, I can't find any cause or solution that is constant.
Has Microsoft not had any input into this problem. What happend to the
network setup disc feature anyway has that been chopped, would be nice to try
instigated by a vista OS.

Hi I have solved this problem in the short term for myself at least.
I just completed a long diagnostics report directly into the reply window
(normally I will paste from a text file) and as I executed the post my
internet went down. Gutted.
So in the chance of lack of interest and reply I will keep this short. If
anyone is interested I will redo a long post.
Gigabit LAN or 10/100 LAN , onboard LAN or PC card LAN , or
drivers for certain network adapters. One of these is the answer.
This would have been more clear from the post which I lost but to put it
in a nutshell I have disabled My PC card Gigabit LAN and gone through the
onboard 10/100 LAN on one of the 3 PCs in the network and everything is great
as far as pulling to that PC is concerned.
NB I am pulling files FROM a PC which is still connected to the LAN with
onboard Gigabit LAN and from a non Gigabit LAN ethernet network drive which I
could not do before. There is no non responce time no calculating time etc.
The only change is to disable the PC card Gigabit LAN adapter on the PC used
to pull the files and connect/enable the 10/100 onboard adapter. Still
connected through a gigabit switch. I am now gonna see what the results on
the other pcs are.

Ok update
PC's Configuration as was
PC 1 Gigabit LAN onboard - enabled and connected
10/100 LAN PC card - disabled and diconnected
PC 2 Gigabit LAN PC card - enabled and connected
10/100 LAN onboard - disabled and diconnected
PC 3 Dual Gigabit LAN onboard - 1 enabled and connected
1 disabled and diconnected
Buffalo non gigabit Linkstation and drivestation network drives
PC 1 XP Home 32 bit and Vista RC2 5744 32 bit dual boot
PC 2 Vista RC2 5744 32 bit solo o/s
PC 3 XP Home 32 bit and Vista RC2 5744 64 bit dual boot
All PCs/drives Ethernet cable to Netgear Gigabit switch to BT Home Hub
Router/Modem
Was having huge problems moving files/folders anywhere where vista was
involved.
By changing PC 2 from PC card Gigabit LAN to onboard 10/100 LAN I can now
communicate and move both ways fully between PCs 1 and 2 and network drives.
I have not taken diagnostics to PC 3 yet but this PC is not so important and
is mainly XP to XP if at all network activity. For my needs, other than
wanting Gigabit LAN, this is now solved, only than to wonder if this is a
driver issue with the PC card Gigabit LAN. I have just noticed that I bought
the card as a Dynamode 10/100/100
Mbps 32 bit Gigabit Network adapterand it shows up as Realtek RTL8169/8110
Family PCI Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0) in devices manager. I could not
find a better driver than the one installed but have not looked since I
realised there was a difference in the name.

Update
Dynamode 1000 and realtek RTL8169/8110 are the same ie 8169 chip.
Both Dynamode and Realtek latest drivers (although only advertised as for up
to XP) are the latest drivers and are installed on my PC. I have found
information on the internet which says Vista has drivers for and is
compatible with RTL8169.
On PC 2
When the Gigabit LAN is set to auto negotiate speed - problems with network
When the 10/100 LAN is set to auto negotiate speed - the network is OK
When the Gigabit LAN is set to 100 base full duplex - problems with network
When the 10/100 LAN is set to 100 base full duplex - the network is OK
When the Gigabit LAN is set to 100 base half duplex - THE NETWORK IS OK
When the 10/100 LAN is set to 100 base half duplex the network is OK
Conclusion the Realtek gigabit LAN drivers are no good for 1000 base and
are only good in 100 base if half duplex.
PC 1 has Onboard Intel Proset Gigabit LAN which has widely advertised its
Vista compatibility.
PC 3 has onboard dual nvidia Gigabit LAN which I have not looked into yet |

After replacing Vista Ultimate RC2 5744 with a clean install of Vista
Enterprise RTM 5600 the network/driver problem is no more I can use
Gigabit LAN in auto negotiate best speed (ie 1000 base full duplex) with no
proplems.

Not that it's any help to you but I believe some files are protected by
something akin to digital rights management. I'm sure someone here can say
precisely what it is. For example, I wanted to apply the Link Layer topology
patch from MS to my XP machines and went through the verification process
and downloaded the file. When I attempted to copy/paste it to my other nodes
to save time the file could not be moved. I had to, of course, go through
the verification and download process once for each machine in my home,
which was no big deal but that was the first time I ever saw a file I'd
downloaded refuse to be moved on my network.

I have a user that I am supporting who has a similar issue well sort of.
He has an HP laptop running Vista. At his office he is the only PC in
an all Mac environment. I believe the servers are even OS X. At any
rate, the issue he is having is that he can connect to the data share
(everyone connects with the same username/password) he can view/copy
data from the share to his local machine but he gets an error when
trying to copy data to the share about there not being enough space. I
have attached a screen shot. I have tried disabling any security
related settings including anti-virus. I was curious if this was a Vista
related issue and wanted to test with an XP box but they do not have one
on the network. Please advise if you have come across anything similar.
Appreciate it.
