Well, I've had Vista installed for a while now, and have run into at least
one pretty major bug. For some reason, DVD's or CD's (such as application
install CD's), simply aren't recognized at all when put in the DVD tray.
Autorun does nothing, and if you try and open the disc Vista spits out a 'how
would you like to prepare this blank disc' message. There's no way to get
into it. I found at least one other guy with the same problem:
http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=89575
Anyone else come across this?
It has to be a Vista problem, as I have two drives (a DVD recorder and a CD
writer), and the same problem occurs with the disc in either drive. |

simonk83,
Verify your BIOS for determining the Boot Drive, must be your DVD.
If the BIOS is correctly Booting from the DVD, please Post again, to this
Thread, with additional specific information.
Almost daily, Silently, Vista's functionality enhances... what worked
yesterday, might not work today.

Hi,
I can boot from a DVD with no problems. I can also rip DVD's (using DVD
Decrypter or DVD Shrink) within Vista with no problems. When I try and
'explore' or 'open' a disc within Vista, it just recognizes it as blank and
asks me how I'd like to prepare the disc.
The DVD player and discs are fine, Vista is just having problems recognizing
them as non blanks.

Is someone able to let me know how to officially report this bug directly to
Microsoft (just in case they don't already know about it, which I'm sure they
do by now).
Thanks

Have you installed any CD/DVD authoring software, such as

I have seen this problem before in this newsgroup with Nero installed.
I believe the problem was solved by removing or updating to the
latest Nero version. You should check your version of Nero and
update if necessary.
Can't be more specific since I don't use Nero, but the above may
fix your problem.

I get this exact same problem with no DVD authoring software
installed.
I can still read a DVD at the command prompt but if i open it in
explorer it just spits out a 'how
would you like to prepare this blank disc' message.
This happens for video or data DVDs.
If i install DVD authoring software i can see the files but cant
access them (bar via the command prompt).

Yes a VERY frustrating bug. I have a pristine install of Vista Business and also experiencing this problem.
Here is a stupid work-around: Note that both dbl-clicking the drive and right-clicking and selecting Explore throw the message "Prepare this blank disc" Instead, try right-clicking and selecting Search... Then type * in the list of resulting files. You still cannot dbl-click individual folders, but you can launch executables. |

I had this same problem. Someone on another forum posted a fix that worked for me.
| Quote: |
| Have you been reconfiguring the cables or jumpers on the drive recently? I had the exact same problem today with my DVD drive after changing the jumper settings. I went into device manager, uninstalled the drive, and then let Vista detect and reinstall it - and it started working again right away. |
hope thats some help. |

Monsteck helped me on the Microsoft forums, so I thought I'd come over and share something I learned from a problem I had a few weeks ago.
I decided to install VMware in Vista so I could run programs in XP without having to reboot. During VMware installation, autoplay is by default, turned off, stating that the feature can have incompatibilities with some drives in VMware. From then on, both of my drives couldn't read discs. Whenever I would try to play one, I would get a dialog box, asking me if I wanted to "Prepare this blank disc". Having done nothing else to the computer besides the VMware install, I figured that it had something to do with the problem, and turned autoplay back on in the registry.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDRom
change "Autorun" value from "0" to "1" |
Worked for me, just needed to
1. Reboot afterwards
2. Insert a regular disc (NOT blank and NOT rerecordable--like a commercial disc or any other disc that you know you can't write on), and let Vista try to format it (and since you KNOW you can't erase anything on the disc, the warning it gives you doesn't mean anything). It'll give some error.
After that, things should be smooth as butter. |

Dear Friend, I had the same problem which made me go crazy, almost. After doing some search on the web, I found the solution which proved to be perfect in my situation.(Thanks to Roger the Shrubber (http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies-archive.cfm/729655.html)). I hope it will work for you as well. Please execute the following the steps.
Go to CONTROL PANEL, SYSTEM and MAINTENANCE, SYSTEM, DEVICE MANAGER (on the top left), DVD/CD-ROM DRIVERS, double left click your DRIVER, go to DRIVER and Uninstall it. Then, shut down your PC and unplug your driver(DVD writer, CD-WRITER, etc.). Start your PC and when it is ready, PLUG your driver so that Vista reinstalls it. Do not change the USB station of your driver, if you do, the same thing may happen, but you can always follow the previous steps. Enjoy Your Work!!! |
