My Vista Ultimate PC prints to an HP printer on an HP Jet Direct print server
via a TCP port.

I have found that if my Vista PC goes to sleep/standby mode, upon re-awaking
it shows the printer as "offline". I can ping the jet direct card from the
Vista PC, and other PCs on the network print to the printer just fine. So
the issue seems to be that when the Vista PC goes to sleep, upon re-awaking
the printer stuff doesn't properly "resense" its network state or wake back
up.

A print job placed in the queue just sticks. Upon a reboot, all returns to
fine and normal - and the print job is sent to the printer. I found this
same issue when I was running Vista RC2.

Anyone else finding this problem?

Disable Bidirectional on the port first. If that does not address the issue
(or is not available) try disabling SNMP on the Standard Port

My issue is even simpler...whenever I restart, my printers go offline, and
the only thing I can do to remedy is delete and re-add the printers. My
printers are on a Linksys print server, and work just fine with my two XP
machines. The problem is only on my brand new Dell Vista Home Premium
machine. I tried unchecking the bidirectional box immediately after
re-adding the printer (i.e. while it is still "online"), but the system does
not let me apply the change.

FYI, in case this help, when I try adding the printers as network printers,
it finds the printers but then doesn't let me add them. When I try adding
the printers are local printers, that works until the next time I restart.

What is the configuration settings of the Standard TCP/IP port? If they are
configured for SNMP, I would disable this?

Same problem as Bonder5 (I'm using a Netware PS110 printserver):

1 It's necessary to add "a local" printer (using network ports - \\Printserver\p1 & p2) to get Vista to connect to and install the printers

2 The printers are "ready" until Vista is shut down, restarted, sleep, etc then its necessary to delete the printers and reinstall again as local printers (otherwise all print jobs go to "offline" printer queues somewhere but never print)

Difficulty with responses in this thread: Where & how is the "Standard Port" accessed and how can its properties (i.e. SNMP) be disabled? Alternatively, is it intended that SNMP be removed from the computer using the "uninstall programs" option?

Thanks

UPDATE

SNMP is unchecked in the "turn windows features on/off" under "uninstall programs" on my machine. "Bi-directional" is also not selected under "printer properties/ports". Any further suggestions or ideas will be appreciated.

To disable SNMP do the following:

1) Control Panel (Classic View)
2) Printers
3) Right Click the Network Printer which is offline and select properties
4) Select the ports tab
5) Select the configure ports button
6) Uncheck SNMP

Your suggestion was the first thing tried to search for SNMP ppalonsky, but that method is not available when the printers are "offline". (A "not connected" message is the result when trying to open properties and that is after a several minute wait.) If there is some mysterious "standard port" (versus "printer port") to be configured per the earlier suggestion, I don't know how to find it. The only functional solution so far has been to remove and reinstall the printers every time vista wakes up. Then the printers work fine until after another standby or shutdown.

Continued searches of this and other forums shows "print server" problems to be very common for vista. Searching the windows website "vista ready" list revealed no print servers and a surprisingly small number of printers. It's a curious situation for any current operating system.

So far this glitch prevents the use of vista laptops in our office environment. It's getting hard to find XP laptops and they seem to be holding a premium. Linux works fine but there is some resistance to learning a new system. I'll keep watching for any and all potential solutions to this unexpected incompatibility.

Thanks

Turning off the SNMP on the printer port page above seemed to solve the problem for me. However I did have to delete the offline network printer and then add the network printer back in. Then I immediately changed the SNMP value on the printer (before printing anything) via the method I described above. Since doing that I can restart the notebook or put it to sleep and the printer continues to work afterwards.

This is such a pain in the arse. Why doesn't it "just work" like every other feature in Vista. This is the only feature that stick in my craw about Vista.

Is it because of the version type...? I am using Home Premium.

You don't have to delete your offline prin ter or reinstall it. You don't even have to to delete the files waiting in your hung printe r queue.

I have a bunch of ne twork printers set up on my Vista machine and they all worked perfectly untill I installed a third party softwa re that installed an Amyuni PDF virtual printer. That's when my networked printers started going offline.

I solved the problem using Alan's tip (thank you Alan!) of disabling SNM P.

1. Click on "START" then "Settings" then "Printers".
2. Go to "File" (or right click on the folder's background) and select "Server Properties".
3. Select the "Ports" Tab, find your port, click "Configure Port", disable SNM P, click "OK" and, voilĂ , your printer will come online.

Thanks for the reply.

I HAD been using this method, but as soon as the printer is turned off (via power issues or the cat) and I try to print to it, it all collapses again.

What has been working is turning off the spooler and printing directly to the printer. I think this is a slower print method, but has been working.

What is this Amyuni PDF thingie? I do use CutePDF for virtual printouts. I didn't have a problem with Windows XP, just Vista. Will using the PDF print features of Open Office 3.x cause a problem as well?

It still should just work...
