Hi,

I ran both the beta and RC1 with no problems. I have the following 2 drives
in my machine:

Toshiba DVD-ROM SD-M1102
TSST corp CD/DVDW SH-W 162Z

They both worked correctly prior to installation of the retail version of
Ultimate. Vista recognises both drives and states that they are both working
correctly. However, on insertion of an audio CD or DVD however, absolutely
nothing happens. If I click on the drive it just opens up, rejecting the disk
and I get a "Insert a Disk" message. Additionally, the icon does change from
DVD to CD in Computer when I insert a CD.

Search hasn't given me any results. Any clues greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Have you configured Windows Media Player correctly?. Are the latest patches
installed?. Have you checked Event Viewer for error messages or codes?.

Have you specified the drives as primary audio /video playback/recording
devices in Windows?.

Yes to all. Interestingly, if I boot/reboot with a disk in one of the drives
then that drive then functions correctly during that session.

Interestingly, I am having the exact same problem with a Samsung SATA
Drive: TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S183L SCSI CdRom. The only way I can get
Vista to acknowledge any disc in the drive is to boot with it in the
drive. I've looked for drivers for the ASUS motherboard, but there are
no updates for it on Vista. Any suggestions???

This is my problem with the Samsung SH-S183L: I installed it on my Windows Vista 32-bit system, with a Biostar P4VTB mobo. Ever since, it has only given me grief. Whenever I insert blank media, the computer hangs. When I insert some discs, such as a store-bought DVD, the system hangs. If I reboot the computer with the disc in the drive, I get a blue screen of death and my system takes a dump. So obviously, thus far, I have been unable to use it. Samsung's tech support has been slow to respond, and their support site lacks... well, support. Any ideas?

Guys,

after struggling with this problem, i decided to replace the 80-
conductor ATA100 cable with a 40-conductor ATA33/IDE cable.

To my surprise the problem went away !

Greetings

I guess I should have updated this a while back. After posting my
earlier message, I looked for drivers from the chipset manufacturer's
site. Where the MB manufacturer did not have an update, the chipset
manufacturer did. I installed the driver and the problem was fixed. I
can now read all of my discs properly without having to reboot.

Cheers!

Who is your MOBOs chipset manufacturer?

The motherboard is ASUS and it is using a VIA chipset. I went to VIA's
website.
