Has anyone tried clicking on links to media like MPG files with IE7 on a
Vista RTM machine?
I always get page can not be displayed. However, I can right click on the
link and choose save target as... and save the file, then play it back after
download is completed.
I never had this problem with Windows XP even with IE7 installed on it.
Has anyone experienced this problem? Does anyone have a solution? |

Hello,
Do you have any third party media players installed (such as Winamp,
QuickTime, etc)? Also, try using the Default Programs control panel to see
if it can remedy the problem. You can find this tool by clicking Start,
Default Programs, and in the window that appears click on "Set your default
programs".
Have a great day,

No Winamp, but I do have Realplayer and also Quicktime. However, I have set
Windows Media Player to be the default player for all media content, except
for content that Windows Media Player can not handle.
I have the same software setup in Windows XP (Realplayer, Quicktime, Windows
Media Player) and when I click on a link to an MPG or MPEG file that is shown
on a web page, Windows Media Player launches and plays the file.
As previously stated this does not happen with Windows Vista.
As for Default Programs control panel, associations for Windows Media Player
are set for file type .mpeg and .mpg files and are verified to be associated
with Windows Media Player.
When I double click on any of these files stored on my local hard drives,
Windows Media Player launches and plays the file.
Thanks,

Here is an example of what I'm referring to.
This is a very simple page with a link to a 7 MB wmv file.
http://www.appleattorney.com/Erik/index.html
Try clicking on the link and see what happens. For me, I get Internet
Explorer cannot display the web page.
If you right click on the link, you can choose to save target as... and save
the windows media video file to your local machine and then play it in
Windows Media Player.
If you do the same thing with Windows XP and IE7, when you click on the
link, Windows Media Player opens and the video plays.

No issues here (in the UK) - a left click opened a video of you driving
your car in WMP
And this is using remote desktop to the main PC from a laptop.

This issue is not occuring on a different pc with Vista Business Edition, no
3rd party software.
Computer that is having the issue has Vista Ultimate, iTunes, Quicktime,
Real Player, Nero 7.5.9.0A, Roxio 9.
Anyone know how to fix this issue other then wiping and reloading?

As previously stated this issue was not occurring on a PC with Vista Business.
I set about installing the apps that I have on my home PC with Vista
Ultimate and then trying the Media link after each one.
It seems that after I installed Nero 7.5.9.0A, I started having the problem.
After uninstalling Nero, the issue sort of went away. Now, when I click on
the MPG link, IE7 first downloads the file, then automatically launches Media
Player and plays the video. Previously, it would launch Media Player
immediately and then start buffering the media file and start playing it
around 70% - 80% complete.

Rather than re-installing the operating system try uninstalling iTunes,
QuickTime, Real Player, Nero 7.5.9.0A or Roxio 9 one at a time to determine
where the conflict is.

If I had to guess, I'd say it's probably Nero, because it's broken for me
with it installed, too. Nero claims to be Vista ready, but it's still pretty
flaky, so it wouldn't surprise me if it were the culprit.

Mike,
I have this exact same issue with IE7 in Vista RTM. My post in this group
dated November 27th states: All of my movies play fine outside of IE7. It's
only when I link to a movie from inside of IE7 that I get the message
'Internet Explorer cannot
display the webpage'. Also, this happend after a clean install of Vista
Ultimate without loading any other progs at all. I have yet to find a
solution. tkrk.

It's not really the fault with the software that is installed, just
the file associations changed by the installation.
I have Nero installed and it works fine here, but I chose NOT to let
Nero adjust the file associations, so WMV files are still opened by
Media Player by default on my system.
This is simply a case of users not understanding how programs are
installed, and that they usually presume that you want to use them to
display content.

Right-click on the file and choose Open with, then in the popup window
look for Media Player. If it's not listed, there should be a very tiny
down arrow on the right side, click it and you'll see a larger
selection of programs to choose. Click on Media Player and then check
the box near the bottom that says "Always use the selected program to
open this kind of file", then OK, and it will open the file in WMP and
it should fix the file association for that one type.
If you want to change several file types, do the same thing with each
file type. You'll notice the representative icons will change on the
files too. |

Bill,
I disagree. I have also installed Nero and did not let it take any file
associations but am seeing the problem described by the OP. I chnaged the
default app for .mpg files from WMP to Showtime and then back again to WMP
and now .mpg links will download to a TEMP file and then open in WMP.
However, the links do not automatically stream in WMP like they used to and
the other filetypes that I did not change the default app for still give the
'IE cannot open this webpage' error.
Anyone have any other ideas?

Sorry Bill, but this is not the case here. I am very familiar with file
associations and how to set them up. However, I have verified that my file
associations are correct because when I browse my hard drive to a MPG file
that is stored there and then double click the file does open in the
"associated" application (Windows Media Player). The problem occurs when
clicking a link on the internet to view the same type of file. It should
automatically open Windows Media and play it (after some buffereing maybe).
When I do a fresh install of Windows Vista Ultimate, this function works.
When I install other software (namely Nero) and even after restoring file
associations back to Windows Media Player, links to MPG files on the internet
do not play.
I have determined that the problem occurs after installing one of the
components of Nero. I just haven't figured out which one yet.

Remove Nero, get the latest version from their web site. So far I have only
installed the following componets while retaining the ability to play mpg
files from the internet.
Components:
Nero Burning ROM (and Express)
Nero BackItUp
Nero CoverDesigner
Nero Recode
Tools
Special Features
I am starting to suspect that Nero ShowTime is the culprit, but not sure yet.
Also, Thanks for those that put me onto the Nero track to resolve this issue.

I hate to say this but the function works on clean / fresh install of Windows
Vista. Read other posts in this thread for information about Nero may be
causing this issue.

I still don't think it's Nero causing the problem since I have it here
(v7.5.9.0) and no issues. I haven't bothered to upgrade to the "A"
version either. Perhaps an older incompatible version might be
screwing it up? |

I concur that Showtime appears to be the culprit. I uninstalled Nero, cleaned
the registry, rebooted and reinstalled all Nero components except Showtime.
Now all media links download to a temp folder and then open in WMP. I'd love
to get them streaming directly in WMP as they did previously but at least I'm
not getting the 'IE cannot open the webpage message"!
Interesting that Bill has the non-A version of Nero and that all seems to
work ok - I thought that it was only the A version that was Vista compliant.
Oh well...

I also have the same problem, click a video link and it downloads the whole
file first then plays it.
Thanks

I've got the same problem overhere.
Install Nero 7.5.9A on Vista, and mediaplayer no longer opens from within ie7. Uninstall Nero, then it works but first the complete movie file is downloaded, so no streaming....
Unfortunately I didn't find a solution yet
and... I did not associate any file extension with nero (disabled all during setup). |
