So, yeah... Obviously, I can't activate the 'ole Windows Vista. Yet another
Micro$haft product with bugs in it.
I tried online activation, which gives me the error code:
0x8007232C
DNS request not supported by name server.
How do I found out which name server it could possibly be!? Using the name
server request seems a bit redundant. Why did they opt for a DNS request,
instead of using a static server?
Second: I tried 'slui.exe 4' and no go... The drop-down box stays gray with
'Afghanistan' as the active selection. How can I bypass the locked drop-down
box and get a number?
If my ISP is blocking DNS requests, why should they trust someone and allow
that traffic, when it's obviously being blocked for security reasons!?
Obviously, Micro$haft didn't think this one through... |

Sorry, forgot to mention that the machine (in question) is in the DMZ.
Obviously, it's not my network blocking the DNS but any multitude of network
devices between me and the end-point.

Have you asked your IT department?
Since you are attempting to activate Enterprise, that is where you
should start.
"If my ISP is blocking..."
that sounds more like an ISP issue rather than Microsoft as you
suggest.

Contacted my ISP, and they shunned me saying that this was a Microsoft issue,
not their issue So, I could pay $139 bux for a 6-month or so subscription
to Support+ or a one-time $99 fee [ATT/SBC]... All this just fix a simple DNS
issue...
I can do nslookup on www.google.com and reverse lookup on my i.p. address,
so I don't understand what the DNS issue is with activation. The only thing I
noticed, that might be an issue, is that I don't get an "authoritative
answer".
The only other option would be to bring the box to work to activate it.
Also, can anyone tell me why I can't select a country in the drop-down box
for call-activation?
Thanks!

Sorry, been a crazy day...
I can't select a country to get a number, but if I press next, it gives me a
number in Afghanistan to call...
How can I find out the U.S. number and why can't I select a country?
Thanks!

I got some Indian guy, and after I told him it was Volume License, he tried
to transfer me to another department and it failed giving an error code of
SB98: The call you are trying to make is outside of your area...
Can anyone tell me what type of DNS request the SLUI program is doing?
Am I the only that's having this two-teired issue of not being able to
active online or get the numbers by using 'slui.exe 4'?
Vista succesfully passed genuine advantage validation but can't activate. Is
there a downloadable tool, such as the WGA Validation tool?
[This, I really doubt, but it's worth asking...]
I understand Microsoft's necessity for activation, but leaving customers in
the dark about how activation works or what methods to troubleshoot should
'a', 'b' or 'c' issue arise is not consumer-friendly.
Is there a packet-capture program compatible with Vista, so I can see what
the DNS request is, and work from there?

There are two types of activation... Multiple Access Key (MAK) and Microsoft
Key Service (MKS). The key you tried to use suggests that it's a MKS type
key. Your computer was contacting the DNS to find the MKS service on your
network. The response tells me that the DNS server your computer is using is
not holding a service record for the MKS service. Volume License key, you
say? Yep, that sounds like that might be what's happening.

You have stated you have an enterprise version.
whether some or all of your issues are a result of customization by
the owning organization, is something you need to determine.
You need to contact the IT department of your organization.
They maintain your organizations computers and are not the same as
your ISP.

If you have a legitimate Corporate Volume Licence OS, it is activated
remotely via a Microsoft Server.
Just where did you acquire it?
And it has to be reactivated every 6 months.
A Microsoft innitiative to stop piracy.

When you installed you didn't specify a product key. In fact, you weren't
asked for one. Enterprise versions install with a special KMS key that tell
the activation service to look for a DNS record for your KMS server.
Obviously that won't extend outside of your organization.
You can A) bring it to work where on that network, if the admins installed
the KMS server correctly, your PC will be able to find the KMS record
or
B) See if your IT department also has MAK keys. You can then, at a DOS box
(with administrative rights) enter the command ...
cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -ipk <productkey>
(replacing <productkey> with the MAK key your IT folks gave you, followed
by...
cscript c:\windows\system32\slmgr.vbs -ato
to perform the activation process.
So, no "bugs" as you put it (at least in this situation), it's you who are
not using the product as designed. |
