Post subject: Vista goes AWOL
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>performance_maintenance (more info?)

Hi All, I've struck a problem on several client's machines running Vista
recently and was wondering if anyone can help. Often, usually not long after
startup, Vista starts something running in the background and whatever it is
virtullay brings the unit to a halt, hard disk I/O is flat out and often the
display is greyed out. the cursor turns into the circle and you get no
response from the machine including ctl+alt+del. I've checked all the usual
suspects: antivirus scan, defragg, turned defender off, etc. but nothing
seems to make any difference and this can take over half an hour to
finish/clear. This is starting to really annoy some of my clients who arrive
at work and want to get working, but can't - Any ideas, suggestions or links
would really be appreciated. Thanks.

Post subject: Vista slow starting up

I had a similar issue. The Vista machines took way too long to start up. I found that if I took them off the network they were pretty quick to get up and running. At least quick for Vista.

My net work was in a Lab and I had let someone set up the DNS and DHCP. Problem was a minor DHCP issue and a major DNS issue. The forward lookup zone did not have the machines registered. Even with that problem they would finally get on the Domain but took anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes.

After fixing the above issues they took about a minute or so to get up and running.

Hope this helps.
