I have a Visioneer 5800 USB flatbed scanner running on my Windows XP
SP2 computer. I believe this particular scanner was first introduced in
early 2001. The 5800 is ancient by tech standards but it works fine and
does everything I need it to do.
Is there a website that will tell me if the driver that powers the
5800 is compatible with Windows Vista? The MS Vista Upgrade Advisor had no
info on this scanner. And Visioneer long ago stopped providing tech support
for the 5800. |

I would say the scanner is history if you run vista. Many people don't
remember when xp came out
that many of the device manufactures would not or could not write drivers
for their products.
I have a Lexmark X75 trio that is not supported by Vista or Lexmark for
drivers at this time . I will not go and purchase a new Printer, so until my
Lexmark dies or drivers come out for it, I will continue to run XP.

I have a Visioneer 8600 and when I installed VISTA RC2 it told me to load my
origional Visioneer Disk and apparently VISTA then loaded the driver in XP
compatibility mode and the scanner has worked fine ever since. I could not
get it to work in RC1 or Beta2.

I'd recommend trying it since my experience with my ancient HP SJ5P scsi
connected scanner is that VISTA detected it but that I could not scan with it
until I installed the early Deskscan 2.9 software (not the one that actually
came with the scanner but one that TeamHP found preferable.

which echoes my own experience. |

My frustration is that I consider my Visioneer 9320 to be "new." I only purchased it because Windows XP wouldn't talk to my dear old UMAX flatbed scanner (which I held onto for a couple years then finally disposed of). Now, there are two scanner manufacturers on my "Never Consider Buying From Again" list! I'd rather keep an old computer with an old operating system than to purchase a new scanner every 3 years! This is ridiculous. |

Under Vista Home Premium 32bit, my Visioneer One Touch 8920 reinstall of PaperPort failed to install the driver (dated 8/24/01) and gave a "Hardware Not Found" message. After trying a couple drivers from the web, I finally got it working well enough to do a simple 600dpi scan--don't know about the other functions (slide scan, etc). Wish I could say exactly what did the trick, but maybe this encouragement will save a few Visoneers from the toxic landfill.
Some Hints:
I downloaded the 8920.303110.exe and 8920.exe drivers. The one that worked had these properties: Label: Visioneer 87XX/89XX USB Scanner; Dated: 8/28/2001; Version 3.0.0.0. It didn't install with the "Run" command, but I was able to see it after: Start/Control Panel/Classic/Cameras & Scanners. More recent XP drivers may not work; no official Vista driver is planned because the 8920 is no longer supported due to planned obsolescence.
