When I try to -view photos- on an SD -card- from a digital camera, I
have to open a DCIM folder, then a nikon folder to see the photo files.

No.

And it's best to copy all of them to your hard drive before doing
anything with them anyway.

This would depend on your camera's settings. Most cameras store pictures in
a folder to avoid problems that can happen with too many files in the root
directory of the storage device. If it creates these folders, then you have
to open them to view the pictures.

I think you can use a recovery tool Stellar Phoenix Partition Recovery
Software which is a complete partition recovery tool and which can help
you a lot in your case.The software is quite user friendly and
helpful....give a try
