Stop Error 0x000000E3

Hi,

Windows Vista Ultimate. I've put this under Games because that's how the
error effects me the most. Basically, I'll put my game's DVD in the drive
and attempt to run that game (Medival II Total War, C&C3) but usually I will
get a BSoD with the above first error. I've recorded a few full errors so
you can see them below:

"A thread tried to release resources it did not own." With various
combinations of the below:

stop: 0x000000E3 (0x86D6C5E0, 0x8608AD78, 0x00000000, 0x00000002)
Stop: 0x000000E3 (0x86AC6390, 0x881E3580, 0x8684D5A0, 0x00000003)
Stop: 0x000000E3 (0x866E93E0, 0x8608AD78, 0x00000000, 0x00000002)

I've got a feeling it's a wider problem than games as whenever I try to
interact with these 'problem' DVD's Windows also Bluescreens (i.e., trying to
explore the DVD, trying to Virus Scan the DVD).

The error seems to have been resolved in W2k but nothing for Vista yet.
Just wondered if anyone had any ideas how to fix it or would it be a case of
waiting for a SP?

Hi Will, I had the exact symptoms that you are describing. After wrestling with it all day uninstalling apps and switching hardware I finally found what was causing my Bsod. I tracked mine down to the WinDVD application that came with the Asus motherboard. After I removed that everything is working perfectly now. I hope this applies to your situation or can help someone.

Damn, what's to understand, he was getting a BSoD, he uninstalled WinDVD,
and the problem went away.

Seems like a pretty productive day to me? I'm sure "Will" wherever he is
will be happy to see this (there's bound to be a couple Will's out there
with this problem).

Not totally useless, no need to get so hostile.

I agree. What else is there to say? Will stated a problem, Tyler
posted a solution. Some people just want to be combative because they

Hi Pooh-Man, good point. I used WinDVD on XP and installed it on Vista
without thinking about. I will try WMP.

OK, Vista plays DVD's and burns DVD's, unlike XP. Another good and free
solution is to get VLC. It's plays just about all video and audio files,
including DVD's.

I don't know exactly what that error means but I do know it is a hardware
error and not a software error. Perhaps your DVD/CD drive can't read the cd.
Try cleaning the cd with mild soapy water or get a replacement cd.
