I had the same problem, most people would browse for the printer wirelessly or bluetooth. then would be able to print but yet word or excel opens up slow.

Frist delete the printer you already have setup, also delete any other pritner you dont use anymore.

Use local printer .... Click on... create a new port..... (in the box it must say local port). a window opens up.

Type in the path of the computer and replace the drivers with vista drivers in that list or cd you have. It'll ask you to replace or reinstall the current drivers .. just replace it, even tho it says recommended. Then drivers will reinstall itself then word/excel should work. Any other questions just reply.

Try naming the printer share with a short name with no spaces. I think that trips up the network path statement...

I tried this and got the message "The network name cannot be found". I used \\DESKTOP\hp psc2200 - DESKTOP is the name of the computer that has XP. Help?

After much effort, I found that opening Printers and Faxes and removing redundant printers, i.e., network printers that didn't function, fixed the problem completely!
