Random System Freezes-Vista

I performed a clean install of Vista from XP on a new Dell Dimension E250.
The only problem I noticed thus far is a random system freeze lasting 30-60
seconds and then the system resumes normal operation like nothing happened.

Does anyone have a solution?

I have the exact same problem it will just become non responsive for a couple
mins and then start to act normal again. It drives me up the wall. I have a
dell dimension 9150. With Pentium d Processor and 2 gigs of ram. If anyone
has a suggestion it would be greatly apprciated

Same thing. It's been happening since I installed Vista, and I can't find any
reason for it doing this. All my drivers are up to date and everything.

I have a Dell XPS Pentium D, with 2 gigs as well.

I wish someone would recognize this as an actual problem. It never used to
do this under XP, so I can only assume it's a Vista related issue.

I agree with you. I have a AMD Athlon 64 x 2 dual-core system with 2 GB of
RAM and despite a clean install and the latest drivers, I get these random
freezes that last anywhere from a few seconds to a minute, after which the
system continues to function - most of the time. There have been times where
it froze so long that I simply did a hard reset. I look forward to hearing
what the solution is to this one.

Ditto on a brand new HP system ... very frustrating. I'm using a switch and
occasionally toggle between the HP and a laptop, but there doesn't seem to be
any connection. It happened again last night when the laptop wasn't even
turned on.

Myself and a co-worker are having this same issue as well. We both are
running 64-bit. My system is listed below, It was well endowed. Anyways,
mine has frozen several times in the past 2 weeks. Sometimes, a
CTRL-ALT-DEL, would wake it up, and I would open task manager, but about 20
sec.s later, it would freeze again. A few times it froze and I had to hard
reset. Another time it froze I was just printing pictures and halfway
through it froze and stopped printing. Another time I was downloading a big
file and it froze. It's all random when it freezes. Don't see anything in
task manager hogging CPU, other than idle process. I think it's gotta be
linked to a security update. I did the system restore as well before all
this and still no good. Really no sure how to trouble-shoot this issue.

I have just built a new PC based on Vista Home premium and it too randomly
freezes for a while then wakes up... often some processes continue to run
during this frozen state while others refuse to function at all, I have
noticed that all hard drive activity is suspended during these times...
sometimes the mouse pointer becomes frozen too... and occasionally it
requires a hard re-boot

I have run diagnostics on everything, updated drivers, flashed bios's etc.
to no avail.

If anyone can help I would really appreciate it, it is spoiling what would
otherwise be a pleasurable computing experience!!

I too have the same problem on a new system, Quad Processor, Nvidia8800
video, 4 gigs ram.. nice paperweight... Vista freezes so often and so
randomly I have resorted to using my old system and have VERY seriously
considered loading XP on my new one... I really hope mickysoft gets off
their heiny and finds out what the problem is... I know that it is not
something related to peripherals... too many people with the same evil
experiences... and by the way i tend to LOVE microsoft products... this has
just driven me batty.

The same as each person posted here, I get random freeze-up for approximately
30secs then resumes as normal. For me it is approximately once every 24hrs.
One time this has occured is during boot up, the green progress bar pause for
about 30secs before continuing, maybe this is a clue to help find out what
causes this. This can occur at any time, regardless of what programs are
running. Here is some common symptoms.
* Disk activity stops.
* Media Center stops (shows no-signal).
* Clock in sidebar stops ticking.
* Internet Explorer shows "not responding". Can click tabs with delayed
effect, once the system resumes IE cycles through each tab which was clicked.
* click 'X' to close program but delayed effect until after the system
resumes again.
* Can click on shortcuts to start a new program but delayed effect until
system resumes again. After resuming, each program which was clicked will
start.
* Everything resumes as normal after about 30secs.

I believe this is a fairly new occurence for me, I don't remember this
happening more than two months ago. Since the system resumes as normal,
there is no bug reports sent to Microsoft and so I don't believe anybody will
be working to fix this problem. Did anyone find a cause for this yet?

Thanx for the reply. I never considered the graphic driver as a possible
cause. Currently I have the latest nvidia forceware beta driver (v158.45)
installed. I will try some different graphic driver to see if there is any
difference.

Some other interesting thing I notice. For example: if Windows Explorer
(not IE) will show "stopped responding" the harddrive activity stops, but the
graphic continues working ie (clock in sidebar keeps ticking). This is
different symptom to some of the other occasions of this system freeze (clock
stops ticking). Either way, after about 30secs, Windows Explorer will start
responding and the system continues as if nothing happened.

I am confused about this, I was kinda hoping it would be a fault with
Windows and I might expect a fix. I will continue trying different device
drivers to see if anything changes. For the benefit of anyone else who might
stumble on this thread, I will post my system specs and HijackThis log.

Just following up, I found an answer on a different forum. Few weeks ago I
change the disk drives from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS. Windows automatically
installed some drivers but seems these weren't the best available. After
installing the "Intel Matrix Storage Manager" (SATA drivers) the hard disks
were re-detected and I've been running great for the past couple of days.

I changed to AHCI to take advantage of NCQ. Vista is absolutely thrashing my
hard drives. Supposedly NCQ can reduce hard drive movement.

I cannot turn off the recording in Media Center so I have constant hard disk
activity whenever the computer is on. Automatic defragging seems to never
finish. Plus the burst of activity whenever I turn on the computer. Vista
even regularly accesses my empty drive, fresh formatted with no information
on it. I am plagued by the constant noise of the hard drives clicking away
and it drives me nuts.

The problem is not from changing to AHCI in the BIOS. The problem is that
Vista has installed the wrong drivers for the hard disks. If someone set the
drives to AHCI before installing Vista, they could be relying on Windows
Update installing the correct driver - this isn't happening. So I wonder if
some of the people complaining of random freeze-ups in Vista simply haven't
thought to install a separate sata driver from their motherboard
manufacturer.

I don't want to sound too much like a whingy whiner, but who would suspect
that Windows Update is installing the wrong driver?

Absolutely would suspect wrong drivers though I would check with
your HD maker to ensure which one you should have.

Think Memory -reduce and swap out to see if problem lessens. Also
think Drivers for Hard Disk and BIOS so check with System Manufacturer
or MotherBoard Maker, and even HD maker.

I've been running Vista-32bit on an Intel Quadcore /w 4G ram for about 7
months, and only recently have I been experiencing the symptoms describe
in all the posts above: random freezing with no HDD activity, cursor
still moves, and most commands will "spring to life" only after the HDD
resumes. Instantly I thought "oh boy, my HD is dying slowly". (In once
instance I was in a fullscreen application (WoW) using voice-chatting
software when I experienced a system freeze, and yet I was still able to
chat through the chatting software which was running in the
background!)

So I thought it may be some crazy virus that infected my sys (or under
those extremely rare situations, the boot sector), so I used this
opportunity to format completely and install Windows 7-32bit. After a
clean install, guess what... same problems.

Assuming my HD was the culprit, I completed a full chkdsk during a
windows startup (1hr) and a full memory check using the scanner built
into the windows 7 CD, and they both passed ok. I have noticed that
when the system freezes, if you wait for it to unfreeze it will often
freeze again shortly after. On other days I can go hours of gaming (HD
intensive) with no interruption.

Finally, I've rebooted the PC to see the system freeze right at the
initial motherboard flash screen! So that tells me that HD drivers are
not the problem, but either something with the Bios or something
physically wrong with the HD, or something else I'm not familiar with.
It might be related to updated drivers that were delivered in a recent
Vista patch that are already incorporated to Windows 7. I'd have to
roll-back to XP and see if the symptoms occur there. If I don't find an
answer soon, I will.

Sounds more like a video hardware problem than the HDD or BIOS. Is it
on-board video, or an add-in card? Try updating the video drivers- from HP's
site if it's on-board, card manufacturer if it's an add-in.

Try setting your quality/performance settings in the video control panel
more to performance than quality and see what happens. Download and run
something like HWMonitor ( http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.php ) and track
the GPU temps for a while. They can be quite high under load. Once you find
out the type and model of video, you can Google what the temperature range
should be. Might as well clean out the inside of the PC case while you're at
it, making sure the heatsinks and fans are clean of dust, hair, etc.
