Hey guys. On my XP machine I was using FreeRAM XP Pro.

I got a new computer with vista 64-bit on it, but since FreeRAM doesn't support vista, I need something else. Smile

I mostly used FreeRAM as a handy monitor of ram usage, and to occasionaly free ram after closing a big program, or before running a big program, stuff like that. Monitoring and cleaning. Don't need anything too advanced, but if there's something pretty powerful, fine then, maybe i'll find something useful. Just whatever may be top choice right now for vista.

Also, what exactly is the right term for this kind of programs? memory mangers... cleaners... I dunno.

thanks. Smile

Vista has an improved memory manager and it probably won't need any third party help.

There are however things you can do to free up ram and improve performance. Having sufficient ram in the first place is the best thing to assure good performance.
Some PC companies are still trying to sell PC's with Vista installed and just one gig of ram. That's criminal !!!

Any PC running Vista should have at least 2 gigs of ram and 3 if possible.
All 32 bit OS's will only access a little over 3 gigs anyway, so having 4 gigs is just wastefull.

I set up several new PC's every week, with Vista (something) installed.
Getting vastly improved performance isn't rocket science,,,, it's very DO'able.
First I run a registry script to tell Vista to load its 'Kernal' into ram on boot.
This greatly improves performance.

Then I run a batch file to shut down 22 unneeded Services.
Some are totally disabled and some are just put into "Manual" mode.
I cut my own Vista boot time from 126 sec's to just 50 sec's by doing this.
That's, from power-ON, to ON-Line.

Then, in MSCONFIG/Startup, make sure you don't have anything starting that you don't absolutely HAVE to have running all the time.
Get rid of all the updaters and reminders.

I also remove either Norton or McAfee from every new PC.
Getting rid of those huge system resource hogs is another great way to improve performance. I replace them with AVG 8.0 FREE for a great Anti-Virus program that costs NOTHING!

Then, I install a batch file that I wrote, that empties all the folders where Windows likes to store junk files, like temp files and temporary internet files.
These junk folders will be repeated for every user on the PC.

I put a shortcut to that batch file in the Startup folder, so it runs on every BOOT. This prevents thousands of garbage files from just building up on the hard drive. That's like FREE maid service for the PC.

It takes a little effort to have a PC that stays clean and runs great, but it's absolutely DO'able. Wink

Most of the things I've done for XP, for years, carries over nicely to Vista, with some slight modifications.

Additional memory manager? NEVER!
That's just one more program to run in the background and suck up resources.

Good Luck,
The Doctor Cool

Thank you doctor, I see what you mean. Cool

I guess I do see now that's it hardly necessary, but maybe for more control? I'm a composer, and I write stuff for orchestra, clasiscal pieces or film-like stuff, and all those sounds get loaded into ram. I've got Vista 64 bit, and 6 GB ram. I want to have something on the system try where i can monitor the free ram (like FreeRAM did) and be able to clean it manually if I needed to squeeze a bit more in. I doubt I will have to, with 6 gb, but I might. At least I want to be able to, if possible, and i'll see if it's working for me or not.

Also, my sound library currently does not support vista or 64-bit. There IS a free upgrade though, for a new version just released that supports vista and 64bit, but they've got 30000 orders so mine may still be a couple weeks away.

In the meantime, it WILL work on vista, but since it wasn't made for it, the sounds take a long time too load and take up much more ram than they should; more than they do under XP.

So once I get my upgrade, I probably won't need a memory optimizer thing, but right now, i might end up actually filling up my ram, so I do really want such a program right now to mintor the ram and try to free it when I need to. Actually it already happened. I was trying to open a big film score im working on right, and it wouldn't finish loading cause it said "no free memory block available."

I downloaded "Instant Memory Cleaner" but it only shows total memory of 4GB. FreeRAM of course, shows only 2.

So any reccomendations?

I never understood exactly what kernal s, even though I look it up, read abot it, and then forget... but that's not important. Your bat files sound like great ideas, so, if they're safe and definitely have no drawbacks, can I get those somewhere? post the code or something? Thanks. Smile
