Hi,

I am having problems with Outlook 2007 failing to save passwords. I am also
running 32 bit Vista. The problem began suddenly.

I have the "remember passwords" boxes checked in my account settings. Both
"remember password" boxes are checked for the "login information" and
"outgoing server settings". So, that is not the problem.

There is a knowledge base article on this for XP and earlier versions of
Outlook.

http://support.microsoft.com/Default.aspx?id=290684

I tried to apply the XP version of the article and I was unable to complete
it. I signed on as adminstrator. Yet, when I got to the following
steps.

6. Click Advanced. Then, verify that the user who is currently logged on is
selected, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that
This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply to column.
7. Click to select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with
entries shown here that apply to child objects check box.
8. Click Apply, and then click Yes when you receive a prompt to continue.
9. Click OK two times.

I clicked "replace all inheritable permissions". Then, I clicked the
"apply". This gave me a "do you wish to continue" screen. Clicking yes,
I then recieved a "registry key could not set security in the key selected or
some of its subkeys".

Unable to delete the registry settings in the article, I have reached a dead
end.

I have read that this is a bug that Microsoft cannot repair. Is this true?
And if not, what is the solution? I don't want to get a new email
program, unless I must.

Thanks.

Craig

Found this solution in another group.

After much searching on these boards I've noticed that others were having
this problem: Outlook 2007 would not save the password for your e-mail
account.
I had the problem and noticed that many others did as well.
I have found a solution that worked for me.

Go to C:\users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect. Delete the
Protect folder and it
will eventually regenerate itself, all is well with Outlook now. All
passwords are remembered.

Let us know if this works for you.

The Folders look different than the ones you gave me. I found the
AppData/Roaming folder, but only after going into the control panel, folder
options, view, and then selecting "show hidden folders". I went back and
deselected this after I was finished.

After that, I was able to see the AppData folder. The Protect folder had an
empty folder in it, but I was afraid to delete it until I get some work off
my desk (afraid of a computer crash). I hope MS could get a knowledge base
article up on this that worked in Outlook 2007 help. I think it is a way in
which the design of Outlook and Vista are working together to make a tough
problem to fix.

working as well.

I just update 2 computers that have Vista and Outlook 2007 with 6 critical Microsoft updates today (Jan 9th 2008). One worked fine after the updates and the 2nd computer had the exact same problem as listed here (Outlook 2007 would not save the email passwords despite the box being "checked" to save passwords). And it had been working fine for 1 year before the update.

A quick Google search brought me to this site (God, I love Google and the internet!!)

In any case I followed the procedure outlined here by Ronnie Vernon (Many Thanks!!)

Closed down Outlook 2007.
Went to C:\users\(username)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Protect.
Delete the "Protect" folder.
Restarted Windows Vista.
Restarted Outlook 2007.
Re-inputted all 10 passwords (this computer has 10 email accounts)
Hit Send/Receive button

VoilĂ ! Everything is working correctly again!

Many Thanks to Ronnie and this forum for all your wisdom!

Best Regards,

SoCalGuy-99

Advise next tool-see_outlook_password,know how can recover forgotten or lost passwords for files with *.pst extension and mail accounts of Microsoft Outlook, will help you to recover lost or forgotten passwords either for mail accounts or for LDAP services, tool will recover forgotten password for the following mail services: Microsoft Mail, Web-based mail servers (such as Gmail and Hotmail), POP3 mail servers, IMAP mail servers and Microsoft Exchange Server.

I have a slight variation on this problem:

I have two machines running Vista Home Premium, one running Vista Business and one running Vista Ultimate. All machines are running Outlook 2007 and connecting (via a VPN) to a remote Exchange server.

On the VB and VU machines there is no problem - Outlook remembers the exchange passwords fine.

On the Home Premium machines Outlook was prompting for the password every time it was launched - despite "Always prompt for logon credentials" being unchecked, and despite checking the "remember password" option when logging in.

I ran the fix mentioned elsewhere in this thread (deleting the "protect" folder, etc) and it did do something - now Outlook will remember the password even if you close and then relaunch Outlook.

However, when you shut the machine down and restart, then launch Outlook, it prompts for the password again. As both machines in question are laptops, this is an issue.

Tried upgrading both machines to Business, but the installer had the options disabled - apparently you can't upgrade from Home Premium to Business.

This is really annoying me, so if anyone has a fix I would be eternally grateful!

Where is fine tool-password recovery outlook, recovers forgotten or lost passwords for mail accounts and also passwords for LDAP services that the Microsoft Outlook mail client uses in its work, also recovers passwords for password-protected Microsoft Outlook data files (files with the *.pst extension) that the Microsoft Outlook mail client uses to store user data (contacts, messages, reminders, notes, tasks),can be used to recover passwords to mail accounts and also to display the mail and service settings of all versions of the Microsoft Outlook mail client.
