| I just bought a new computer with Vista, which I love. However, we installed
Oblivion with no problem, but when we try to play it, it says there is an
error and shuts down.
Any ideas??

I running Oblivion on Vista x64, haven't gotten far through the game but so
far no problems. Best suggestion I can give you is to reinstall the game
and see if that makes a difference.

Been running Oblivion on Vista for six months here. Athlon 64 3200+ w/
X850XT and then a Core 2 Duo E6600 and X1900XT. No issues.
Is it the game closing or is it the computer shutting down?

When I click on the icon, it says windows has detected a problem with
Oblivion, and it closes the program. I have uninstalled and reinstalled
already

Try right clicking on the icon and choose run as administrator and see if
that works. I have a game or two that I needed to do that with to get them
to work with Vista

Choose to run the game as an administrator or try the compatibility tab and
set this to Windows XP

You can also try changing the HDR - Bloom - Anti-Aliasing options. If I
remember correctly my game would continually crash if I had it set to Bloom
mode.

I have exactly the same problem. Did you ever find a solution?

I have recently installed Windows Vista Home Premium and have installed Oblivion, it opens fine but when i open any sort of window such as the options menu or load menu or in-game such as pressing tab it causes stuttering, breaking up and tears and rips in the menu. I also cannot see anything in the menu's such as characters etc. I Have run it as Admin, under XP mode and disabled desktop composition. Does anyone have any idea's on how to fix this? I would be extremely helpful |

I just got a Vista 32 bit system, and installed both Morrowind and Oblivion on it. With Oblivion, I saw the issue being discussed here. In Morrowind, I saw another behaviour: the windows sidebar would occasionally try to draw itself over the Morrowind display. This appeared to be happening every time I moved the Morrowind mouse cursor to the screen location where the side bar would be if the desktop was in the foreground.
Since removing the sidebar (right click the sidebar to invoke the context menu and click "Close Sidebar") seems to fix both issues. At least I've been playing Oblivion for 2 hours now, and haven't noticed any menu problems. |

This issue is extremely frustrating for me as well. I have the same exact issue with my brothers laptop and my nieces laptop as well. Strange thing is Oblivion runs on my wifes laptop running XP and it is not as fast has less memory and has an intergrated video card as well!
Please help!! |

Hi, I have XP also and I was able to play Oblivion for about 50 hours without too many crashes of the game. However, it started to get worse and now the game freezes on me whenever I load. I haven't tried any of the fixes here yet but Bethesda tells me that Oblivion was written before Vista came out and hasn't been tested on it. they have no suggestions other than run it on XP (of course, my XP machine doesn't have a good enough graphics card). |

I had this problem and I have solved it. The trick is to NOT install Oblivion in the generic C:/Program Files because Vista's UAC will block mods (and some of the DLC add-ons, it seems) installed ther. So create a new folder in C:/ (C:/Games is a good idea IMO) but ALSO load oblivion.exe using the xp sp2 compatability by right-clicking on Properties. You might need to run as administrator as well, but I do not have to. |

Thanks, this seems to help a little, but I've found the real problem seems to be with the haunted mansion in Anvil (which I have already bought). Every save after I have entered won't load and freezes the program. I can fight my way through to the portal and Benirus will open it, but I"m not strong enough to beat the lich yet (lvl 19 thief/assassin) so if I leave and try to come back the game freezes. |

well, I just keep playing. sometimes I have to reload a previous saved game and lose my progress but if I avoid the automatic saves I don't have too many problems - but it's FRUSTRATING!!! |

make sure you have the latest Oblivion version (1.2) and also go download the UOP (Unofficial Oblivion Patch) as well as the UOMP (Unofficial Official Mods Patch) in case you are using any of the official add-ons and the separate USIP Patch (in case you are using Shivering Isles as well). This might well be a bug that exists regardless of the OS being used. |
