I've got the same two issues. I'm trying to identify what the unknown system device is. I've noticed that my SD card reader doesn't work, so I'm guessing it's somehow related.
I've tried the latest chipset driver package from the Intel website, no luck there.

For the W400/W500 wireless adapters used in the HP laptops ... obtaining the drivers is a little tricky. I also could not get the drivers from the website to install on Vista, even with "run as admin" and compatibility mode XP SP2 enabled.
Here's what you need to do...
Download the XP drivers from HP, and run the exe. This extracts the install files and copies them to the c:\swsetup\xxxx (where xxxx is a number matching the XP driver file name.
In this xxxx there will be a number of files ... but the 3 important ones are..
data1.cab
data1.hdr
data2.cab
you can delete everything except these.
Now these are not microsoft cabinet files but installshield cab files, and you need to use something like winpack to extract files from them.
The actual driver files you need are...
ar5211.sys
net5211.inf
net5211.cat.
If I remember correctly, I extracted all of them from Data1.cab .. not 100% though... been a while :p
Put these three files in a folder, then goto device manager, update drivers for the ethernet controller, have disk, and load these. Works perfect.
And yes, the base system device is the SD card reader. The drivers from HPs website works for this item, but you need to enable "run as admin" to install correctly.

| Dunno why my original post not showing up in the hardware devices thread list (as being the latest poster in the thread). Only if you click on this thread can you see it. Let's see if this helps :p |
