I recently purchased a new Toshiba Satellite with Vista Home Premium
pre-installed. The problem is that Media Player refuses to play streaming
video. It simply pops open a new window with the message "page cannot be
found". With Windows XP and other versions, Media Player 10 & 11 would open
Media Player and play the file. Now, with Vista, it will not.

Any ideas?

Streaming video comes in lots of different formats. Give us an example URL
where the video would play one the old notebook but not on the new one
please and we'll look at it and try to find out what appears to be the
problem.

Rickster, I had a similar problem. This solved it for me:
In control panel>internet options>connections>LAN settings
or
In internet explorer>tools>internet options>connections>LAN settings
be sure Auto detect (proxy) settings is checked.

Having a similar problem as well. Tried the respondents solution and this had no positive effect.

Ok, here is the situation

Tried this on two fresh installs of Windows Vista Home Premium Edition

Using these URLS as a test (you have to log into the site to use these - sorry)

http://www.jlaforums.com/music_page.php?song_id=1968

http://www.jlaforums.com/music_page.php?song_id=1970

These two songs (they are MP3's playing via an embedded Windows Media Player using classid="CLSID:6BF52A52-394A-11D3-B153-00C04F79FAA6)

will not play whatsoever. The error I have been able to find when attempting to access the content is

C00D119
Original Error Code: 80040218
Original Error Message: No combination of filters could be found to render the stream

but then when playing this MP3
http://www.jlaforums.com/music_page.php?song_id=1969

it plays fine with no problems

The webmaster sent me copies of the original two MP3s directly and they play fine on the computer - so it is not the file

Also, when accessing these URLS from (tried all of these) Windows XP/2000/ME/98 using some IE7 and others IE6, they all play with absolutely no problems

Last when accessing these URLS from XP with Firefox 2.0 (with ActiveX enabled) they all play fine. Cannot test firefox in Vista as cannot seem to get the X-OLEOBJECT dll for firefox 2.0 to work

Anyone have any idea what can be causing this. Since it is on two different models of computers with different hardware and both with Vista Home Premium and everything works fine on computers not running VISTA, I tend to think it is something of a bug with Vista/Vista Media Player

Thanks in advance

Ok,

Seemed to figure out what is causing this.

The songs in the original 1st two URLs DID NOT have any TAGS (artist, title, etc) and the last URL DID have tags.

The webmaster added tags to the 1st two URLS and now they play in VISTA

Here is another URL where there are NO TAGS
http://www.jlaforums.com/music_page.php?song_id=1967

and the song DOES NOT play in Vista just as the others didn't before tags were added

As it stands right now Windows Vista WILL NOT play embedded content in an embedded Windows Media player if the content DOES NOT have any tags.

So the question is, how can you get Media Player in VISTA to play songs and videos that are in embedded Windows Media Player on a webpage to play if they DO NOT have any tags?

Post subject: Same Compaq Notebook Same Problem [Login to view extended thread Info.]

I've got the same problem.
Same laptop as above with WMP11 Windows Media Player is version 11.0.6000.6344.
I have narrowed mine down to types of wmv2, wma2 stopped playing
Microsoft sent a file that is straight wmv it plays video fine
but I was playing wmv2 fine and wma2 fine.
Using VLC media player I can play streams that are in wmv2 format
Using Divx player I can play wmv2 and wma2 fine the video is find
and VLC also plays them find but realplayer (which I downloaded after the problem cropped up to try and be able to play a wmv2 file) doesnt play the wmv2 either.
I have tried reseting all the original settings with a registry fix i found on the google search no luck.
System restore didnt save the very first restore of the system and I really dont want to go back using recovery cd's yites.
There has to be a fix with WMP11 somewhere.
Hope you can figure it out.
Oh by the way Vista updates created an audio error and it would not play any files, i went back to original driver and it still didnt work , until I went to advanced sound settings and then disabled all enhancements, but the video doesnt work now .. oh and that happened christmas eve 12/24 until then wmp11 worked fine had laptop for several weeks.
I have added no new software since the problem.
I can't find the same version of wmp to reinstall nor a way to uninstall and pick a previous version.
Please help.
thank you so much

Post subject: k-lite was the culprit [Login to view extended thread Info.]

I was also having issues streaming video with Media Player 11. It would get stuck or freeze on the first video frame while the audio continued to play in the background. I had the k-lite codec pack installed and uninstalling it and then rebooting fixed the issue. I have downloaded and re-installed the newest version of k-lite and video streaming is still working for me.
