McAfee Update Screwed up Internet

Can anyone recommend a good security system for a Dell Inspiron E1405
with Vista and IE7? I had McAfee which automatically updated this
afternoon. Since the update I was unable to access web pages through
links and any website requiring a login went to a blank screen.
McAfee even opened to a blank screen so I couldn't investigate the
issue. I contacted Dell who had me uninstall McAfee and now the
Internet is OK. However, now I'm unprotected. McAfee was bundled into
my Dell purchase so I paid for something that I can't even use.

Any suggestions for a good security system? If I'm going to shell out
more cash, I'd like something reliable.

McAfee is a disaster for any OS. It is incompatible and causes many issues as does Norton.

Use Avast which is very good and it is free. It will not bloat your system as did McAfee

kaspersky internet security works well with vista !
nod32 av is good too.

Please, can you relate a real issue that NIS2007 causes, that is a
severe or irritating issue? I've been using it for a few weeks now and
2 laptops and I find it works well. One thing i particularly like is
that it is unobtrusive, unlike my older copy of Corporate on XP.

oh, i nearly forgot, i had one issue with norton during a system
restore--I got an error that restore didn't complete. I found that the
issue occurs when "turn on protection for my symantec product" is
enable. It's not all that difficult to deal with, on the RARE occasions
that I do a system restore.

Karen,

AVG, Avast and NOD32 are very good AV security applications. I would stay
away from anything Norton/Symantec, ZoneAlarm and McAfee as I have found them
to be incompatible with the Vista OS, unstable and resource hogs.

Feel free to use any application you wish. Do yourself a favor and do not
take my word for it and do not follow the recommendations of anyone else.
Research the matter by using your search engine and visiting different
forums. Once you have accumulated the pertinent information you will know who
to listen to and who not to listen to. Once you have made a decision you
should download the trial (usually 15 to 90 days) version before purchasing
the product.

Please backup all your important files before trying any new product. Make a
restore point prior to the installation of the product. Better yet, you can
also create an image of your system. A little forethought is much better than
hindsight. You should also keep in mind that common sense has nothing to do
with intelligence. Use your common sense when dealing with software
applications and you will prevent and/or eliminate many problems.

You should also keep in mind one thing that will help you immensely in the
future: Just because a company states that its product is Vista compatible
does not make it so.

This is how stupid the customer service people at McAfee are:

Jeejesh: Hi Neel, my name is Jeejesh and I would be assisting you today.
Customer: Just got a question. Are you guys aware that the latest update has hosed Vista SP1 internet? And are you working on a fix
Jeejesh: As I understand, you have an issue with blank McAfee SecurityCenter window, right?
Customer: yeah and links don't work on websites. The customer service link doesn't even work on Mcafee's site. Also my hotmail opens to a blank page
Customer: my company is a Federal government contractor and we are required to use McAfee to VPN to work
Jeejesh: Neel, there is not such an issue wtih McAfee updates and Vista.
Jeejesh: How do you currently connect to the Internet? (Dial-up, DSL, Cable, or Wireless)
Customer: have you Googled, McAfee update screwed up internet. See how many hit's you get
