Is there a way to contect my laptop running Window's Vista to my Desktop
and Printer? My wireless modem is Netgear and is attached to my
desktop. My desktop is running Windows XP.

Can i print from my laptop to my printer connected to my desktop? If I
can access files from my desktop great but not necessary.

I know enought to be dangerous, but not really a techie. If anyone can
help I'd appreciate it. Even if the answer is no you can't do this.

Thanks
Geoff

Yes..

First, you have to do this..

http://compnetworking.about.com/od/windowsfilesharing/ht/enable_disable.htm

and this

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/e2e03106-2546-4085...07-6c3a

Now you need to set the same workgroup for each machine..

Choose one and right click on My Computer

Click on the 'Computer Name' and make a note of the workgroup name. It may
even be 'workgroup'

Now do the same on the other computer and ensure that the same workgroup
name exists. If it doesn't, change it.

Reboot both machines.

Time to add a network printer to Vista..

http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/4097d784-4b1e-423d...be-737f

I am assuming that both machines are running 32-bit operating systems. If
Vista is 64-bit, tell me and I will give you instruction on how to add the
printer..

Hi
You have to configure the File and printer Sharing on the computers.
Make sure that the Software Firewall on each computer allows free local
traffic. If you use 3rd party Firewall On, Vista/XP Native Firewall should
be Off, and the active Firewall has to adjusted to your Network IP numbers
on what is some time called the Trusted Zone (consult your 3rd Party
Firewall instructions.

If you don't know whether 64-bit or 32-bit, you most likely have 32-bit on
both so don't worry about it..

The first two links, one was for XP, one was for Vista, so use the
appropriate instructions for each machine..

Jack,

In your list of reference articles, you note that the Windows XP patch
(kb922120) is not required for XP SP3. I recently used this patch to solve a
VISTA/XP sharing problem and this hotfix requires XP SP3.

If the LLTD Responder is not listed in the Local Area Connection properties
list, your notation could divert users from a working solution.

Note that the downloadable patch (v5) linked on the kb article does nothing for
an SP3 system, but the hotfix (v6) installs the LLTD Responder component and
fixes the problem.
