Favicon Failure

I recently had to re-install the Vista OS on my Gateway Notebook. After re-installing, my desktop shortcut icons are the generic MS IE blue "e". Prior to re-installing, they were all "Favicons" (Hopefully this is the correct term). They had been favicons since day one, the first time I ever fired up the laptop, I had not installed anything to get them. I would however, very much like to have them back. Any suggestions or help would be most appreciated. Gateway has been of no help in the matter.
