| The Windows Vista on my new computer is not recognizing my Deskjet 712c
printer. My research tells me there's no need to download, devices are ready
to use. Windows is supposed to automatically install and I can't add a local
printer. I did just purchase the USB cable for the printer. I've reconnected
the cable a few times and hear the little signal when it connects, but my
printer does not show up in the control panel. Can someone help? Thank you!

The only USB to parallel cable I ever liked was the Belkin F5U002
I have not tried or tested them all but the Belkin cable worked for most
cases.
Some printers will not work with this extra hardware.

If as Alan indicates, that is a USB to Parallel cable converter then
the odds of it working are against you! I know someone who works for
one of the big computer stores and he says that item is one of the most
frequently returned items because it doesn't work for the customer who
bought it.
However usually with such a converter you have to install a driver for
the chip in the cable to get it recognized by the PC -- did you do this
and does it show up in Device Manager? WINKEY + Pause key will open
System Properties and the select Device Manager.
Just where it might be located I'm not sure to scan down all the items
there and click on the (+) to see what is under each category.
Mine was a USB to Serial converter for my phone and I think it came up
under ports and you had to make sure the port is installed and active
there. So in your case I would first look under Ports / Parallel (LPT),
see what Port it have been given and then go to the Printer Properties
/ Driver and make sure that port is setup there.
If that does not help please come back and say so and I'll suggest how
to go on from there. |

I've accomplished many things over the years with my computers, but I must
tell you I'm still an amateur. I went to the Device Mgr but didn't find
anything that caught my attention as a port connection. The cable did come
with a small CD (and by the way, I have to lay my new Slimline on its side to
keep it in place). When I opened it, there are so many files in it. I opened
the 810 driver folder. My choices are IMAC, manual, window, linux, and old
version. I clicked on window, then setup. This didn't work. I didn't see
anything that said install, and I didn't want to just keep trying all the
other things. Thanks so much for trying to help! |

Is there a readme file on the CD? Or information on the website?
What is the make and model of cable converter you bought?
When we find out how to start the installation then right mouse click
on the file and select Run as Administrator -- that may work.
But give me the cable information and I'll do some looking. |

I certainly appreciate your efforts. We somehow now have the printer
recognized in the control panel with a check mark next to "ready." BUT when
we send something to be printed, it adds the page which then immediately
disappears back to a zero, so we still can't print. This is a brand new
computer, so wondering if I can get support if I call HP.

HP will tell you that the printer will not work with the USB to parallel
converter.
What make and model hardware is the cable? There's a chipset in the cable
as well that is powered by the USB cable.

Oh boy, thanks for that bit of info. There's no name anywhere on the cable. I
bought it on eBay...probably made in China. It came with a small CD stating
Driver Certified Hi Speed USB. Thank you for any help!

As Alan says ......
I was able to find out the chip in the cable I got for my Nokia phone
perhaps by running a Belarc Advisor scan.
But really you ought to give up!
On the fact that documents get added to the spooler but don't print you
could go into the Printer Properties -- if it shows up in Start /
Settings / Printers -- and disabling the spooler. Set Print direct to
Printer and see what happens. |
