Hi. I have an HP Pavilion dv6700 Notebook with Vista Home Premium. The computer
is just over a year old and the Pioneer DVDRW drive (DR-KD08HB) just stopped
working. It no longer appears under Device Manager or Windows Explorer and the
disk tray won't even open. I've had no problems with this drive before, it
just
seemed to die on me yesterday after I inserted a CD (which I can't retrieve).
I ran the Microsoft Fix it 50027 but nothing happened.
Is there anything I can do to get it working again?
Thanks. |

Look closely and you will see a small hole in the face. You can push
a sturdy (and straightened) paper clip into that and manually open the
drawer. Do that and see what happens.

Sounds as if the drive has failed and needs to be replaced. Does the drive
show up in the BIOS information/setup screens when you start the computer up
and/or enter BIOS setup?

I thank you both for your replies. I used the suggested paperclip to free the
recalcitrant disk and the CD-DVD drive is now functioning.
This is very strange. What could have caused this behavior and is it likely
to recur?
Thanks again for your help.

The disk may have not been seated correctly causing it to jam slightly and
therefore not opening automatically.

You're welcome.
Use the K.I.S.S. method next time, Richard

Have a look at and follow the instructions in this KB article. I have seen
this problem half a dozen times.

Hi. I mentioned in my initial post that I had run the Microsoft Fix it 50027
from that KB to no avail. Thanks anyway.
