Avast - Free for Home Use
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/us/frt/0
AVG - Free for Home Use
These both work well with Vista however I prefer Avast.

I'm happy with Avast! on all my machines here.

I'm using the AOL AVS (active virus shield) which is rebranded Kaspersky 6.
Just notice the optional AOL toolbar and uncheck the box if you don't want
it.

I've never cared for the performance hit the default settings of Avast!
gets, Ken. To get reasonable performance the user must make some changes.
I've found AVG to be easier on the user and the system intially. Another to
try is Antivir (also free from
http://www.free-av.com/antivirus/allinonen.html).

Those are good choices too. I don't claim Avast! is the only one to
use. I've never personally noticed any performance hit with Avast,
though. Perhaps it's the settings I use.
I prefer Avast principally for two reasons:
1. They update their definitions very often.
2. You can set it to run a scan whenever the screen saver comes on. No
need to remember to do it periodically.

Both are good, however I found Avast default install/setup to be more of a
resource drain than AVG. It might be better with a little tweaking. Have
used AVG for years, literally, and never had any problems with it.

Used the following 3 on Vista:
Norton 2007 (came with system/trail software) - Worked well, with no issues,
but it slowed the system down noticeably
McAfee (free from ISP) - HORRIBLE, lots of issues, really taxed the system.
Then it started to interfere with things like the sidebar. 1 week and it was
gone!
AVG Free edition - NICE, best of the 3 by far and no noticeable effects on
any other areas of the system. E-mail working much quicker too and I like the
little certification it adds at the bottom of the e-mails and RSS feeds in
Outlook. A bit ugly in the interface, but simple to figure out. I might
even shell out the bucks and get the Pro edition.

What chages do you recommend making to Avast?? I like it but I think
you may be correct about the resource drain.

Which Vista do you have? I found a load of problems with anti virus programs
and 64 bit edition Vista Ultimate. In the end I found free AVG worked fine
with it and stopped at that. Even paid for programs didn't seem to work
properly with 64 bit and this was a new installation.

Just be careful if you do get infected. From testing, I have found that free
AVG finds more and fixes more than Nortons does but neither find as much as
Mcafee. Unfortunately I could find only free AVG to work well on 64 bit
ultimate edition. |
