Since I downloaded the new version of AVG Free Antivirus, it insists on
running a full scan every morning. I can neither change the time of day nor
stop it from running. Every morning my computer slows to a crawl until I
remember to stop AVG.

My computer has been clean for years. I run a full complement of security
programs. (AVG, Ad-Aware, Sygate Personal Firewall, Microsoft Antispyware,
Spyware Blaster, TeaTimer, and SpyBot S&D.)

I never get any spam and I do get all my email. (Don't ask me how, maybe
it's BellSouth.) I go only to above-board sites such as Wired.com.

I don't need a daily 50-minute virus scan that never finds anything. Is
there any way to turn the damned thing off so I can run it manually (short
of buying the full version Smile )?

Thanks for your help.

Double-click the AVG tray icon.
Select Scheduler
Click the Scheduled Tasks button
Select the Test Plan schedule
Click the Edit Schedule button

Start AVG. Click "Control Center". Click "Scheduler". Click "Scheduled
Tasks" at bottom of screen. Click/highlight "Test plan in basic mode".
Click "Edit schedule". Un-check "Periodically start scheduled
antivirus test". Click "OK".

While there you may want to disable automatic updates: Click/highlight
"Update plan in basic mode". Click "Edit schedule". Un-check
"Periodically check for Internet updates". "OK" and "Close" your way
out.

The daily running of the auto check is driving me mad, it really slows my PC down.

I run Win XP Professional and AVG 7.5. Followed above instructions but on my PC the 'schedule' button produces a panel with none of the quoted options, there are three boxes, 1. display component (ticked) 2. only when default condition exists 3. ignore faulty condition for component.

There are several options in 'program settings' but cant find an option to turn off daily scans. I strongly object to being dictated to as to how a program is st-up.

Keith.

If you don't want to be told how to set up AVG..... then what do you want?

Here's how I set it up. Do as you please.

Begin by downloading and installing the latest version of AVG 7.5 FREE.

AVG 7.5 FREE, can be downloaded from:
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5

Scroll down the page to "FREE Downloads" and then click on:
AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition 7.5
That takes you to the next page where you can select:
avg75free_488a1157.exe (or the currently posted version)
Save the file to your desktop and run the install from there.

Then once the install is done and you've rebooted your PC, double click the AVG icon in the system tray.

All options are listed in the right side of the window.
click on Scheduler and at the bottom of the window click on
"Scheduled Tasks".
You will see the two tasks, "Test Plan in Basic Mode" and
"Update Plan in Basic Mode".
Click on either one and then click on the "Edit Schedule" button at the bottom of that window. Set each plan according to your wishes.
You can disable both the scans and updates if that's what you want.
Or set them to a time that will not interfere with your normal usage of the computer.

Observation:
If AVG is seriously slowing down your PC, then something is wrong with your PC. It's either lacking in sufficient RAM or it's overloaded with Services and running programs.

On my PC, AVG can do a full scan and I don't even know it's running till the job is complete. It could be running right now and I wouldn't even realize it.

Cheers Mate!

What I meant to say was, I don't want to be DICTATED to by a program as to how it is set up.

Thank you for the info, The problem has now been solved, not with your excellent instructions but accidentally. I had to reinstall AVG 7.5 Pro and luckily on the first install panel I noticed an option to run it daily which I unlicked.
