| After getting rid of AOL I got AVG and uninstalled McAfee. The problem is, every time I restart my computer McAfee pops up asking me to reverify it. And it is in my task bar. I have deleted every McAfee folder I can find. Anyone know how to get the remaining McAfee ghosts out that are haunting my computer and driving me crazy? Thanks.

I have no idea. I got rid of AOL about 4 or 5 months ago. I paid their extra $4.95 a month for the extra security, McAfee, etc, etc... It was supposed to be the latest version and update automatically. Does that help? Everything's gone except the pesky McAfee popup's on startup. So, no clue as to what version. Sorry. I had a hard time giving up AOL. But once my son convinced me that both my computer and I could survive without it, we've both been quite happy and 24.95 a month richer. lol AOL gets their claws in you and won't let go. McAfee seems even worse. |

Manual removal of McAfee products
1. Navigate to C:\Program Files\mcafee.com\Agent\app.
2. Right-click any files that end with .adf and select Delete.
3. Use Control Panel to remove SecurityCenter, as listed above.
To uninstall all McAfee 2005, 2006, or 2007 products with the removal tool (MCPR.exe):
Uninstalling using McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool
Note: This tool only works for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and Windows XP Service Pack 2 operating systems. This tool does not work for Windows 98 and ME systems.
1. Download the removal tool from http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe.
2. Click Save and save the file to any folder on the computer.
3. Navigate to the folder where the file is saved.
4. Double-click MCPR.exe.
5. Click Run. A Command Line window will be displayed, and then close automatically. Wait for a second Command Line window to be displayed. (Do not double-click MCPR.exe again.) The program will begin the cleanup.
6. Observe the installation, which could take several minutes. The following message will be displayed in the Command Line window:
The machine must reboot to complete the un-installation. Reboot now? [y.n]
7. Press Y on the keyboard.
8. Wait for the computer to restart.
All McAfee products are now removed from your computer. |
I ran into the problem of trying to extract McAfee's Security Suite from a customers PC just a few days ago. It was somehow blocking all communications with the internet. It flatly refused to DE-Install.
I had to play "Hacker" for a while to pry it out of the hard drive, registry, and Services list.
There may still be some little parts of it left, but I've restored internet connections and I can see no parts of it still running in the system.
Today, I googled "McAfee Uninstall" and found the above info on This Site.
Then, there's this little tidbit I picked up somewhere a while back.

Removing McAfee
For Versions 5.x, 6.x & 7.x
Download & run VirusScan.reg
(just Google for download sites for "VirusScan.reg")
Go to Start > All Programs > delete the McAfee folder
Delete the following folders:
C:\Program Files\McAfee
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Network Associates
Do a search & delete these assorted files:
Avsmcpa.cpl
Avsmcpa.dll
MCSCAN32.VXD
MCUTIL.VXD
VSHIELD.VXD
VSHINIT.VXD
NaiFiltr.sys |
I hope that this info will be of some help.....to someone.
Cheers!
