I've noticed for the last 5-6 months, AVG Antivirus and Firewall has often required, after an update, that I restart Windows. The AVG icon is black in the task bar. For the first year, it hardly ever required that. Is there something new embedded in the newer version? I also just renewed my yearly subscription.

I have noticed this also, and have no good answer. However sometimes a restart can be avoided: Double-click the AVG icon (grayed out). It will bring up a window; at the bottom is a section entitled, "Anti-Virus." Click the "Update" button and follow the next prompts. This will install the latest updates, and often a restart is not then required.
If the problem persists, you may want to consider installing Avast! antivirus instead, from www.Avast.com. This appears to be just as good. The only thing I don't like about Avast is that it requires an e-mail address.

This was my problem also. I have AVG plus firewall and while I find the security to be excellent the constant restarts are infuriating me.

I have just tried your solution and it has not worked for me.

WELL, you've got an old version there anyway.
So, why not just uninstall it and replace it with the new and Improved
AVG 8.0 FREE.

You can easily download it Here.

Use the Windows Firewall. It's most sufficient for a clean computer.
If you just keep the ET's off of your computer, you won't have to worry about one wanting to "Phone Home"! Wink

Cheers!

I should've posted back here since updating to version 8. Haven't had to restart since updating.

Thank you, I have done that and so far everything is going well. There was a version 8 with firewall.
